So I upsized to SL 285/70-17 tires and with that change comes a change in tire pressure (chalk test to confirm). The factory pressure is 32psi for the 265/70-17 tires and I just performed the chalk test (and verified with an online calculator) that my new tires should be set to 26psi (ish). It seems that the TPMS light is triggered at 26psi (dash light comes on at 26psi). Is there a way to change that threshold pressure that triggers the light? I know some Lexus vehicles have a pressure reset button under the steering column to do this but I haven’t found such button in the 5th gen. Is there something in TIS (techstream)?

Get all tires to 26 and the light should go off. As far as I understand it is set to register the difference between pressure in all tires on vehicle and not just low warning. That is why when you air down on the trail much less than 26 there is no TPMS warning on during your excursion.

I just completed the chalk test this morning and set all the tires to 26psi (at a parking lot about 30 minutes from home). The light came on because I assume one (or more) of the tires is just below 26psi (my pressure gauge measures to 100 psi and is not precise to the decimal pressures). I drove home after and the light did not go off. I have to assume that the light won’t go off at a lower pressure either.

Don't forget the Spare. If it is still 32 and the rest is at 26 - you'll get the light.

Spare doesn’t have a tpms sensor (at least not on mine).

I just aired them all up to 30psi, which turned off the light, but now I’m stuck with overinflated tires… I’m sure someone else has had this predicament.

Airing down to even 10 PSI shouldn't trip your TPMS (doesn't in my Trail as long as all 4 tires same press) light, but maybe something got changed/updated in your 2018 4R

Interesting. I thought all 4runners had the TPMS light on when they aired down for off-roading. Do you have a pre 2014? I'd love to get more date from other members to confirm.

Nobody else has this issue? That is very surprising. Being that another chalk test thread started, I figured I'd bump this one in hopes someone has more information.
The pressure calculators online ( ) suggest 26psi for SL 285/70-17 tires. I'm sure there are other SL 285 owners out there. Truly curious if anyone else has the TPMS light just on (or maybe everyone is just running their tires with too much pressure?).

On my '22, it lets you change the set pressure:

This is exactly what I am looking for on the pre-2020 models. We don't have that fancy center display. Wondering if this is programmable through the Toyota TIS/Tech Stream system or maybe there is another way to set the pressure.

When I had a 4thGen 2004 I was having problems with TPMS and did a lot of research on how it worked. If I remember correctly the tire pressure can be set in the TPMS ECU and also the trigger point - the amount of pressure below the preset pressure the TPMS light comes on. I would assume that the pre-2020s have the same type of settings. This would have to be set with something like TechStream or other software that can access the TPMS ECU. I might be wrong in this, but it is something you could look into. If I remember right the preset was 32lb and the trigger point was 7lbs.

That aligns with what I was expecting. I'll have to get it connected to techstream at some point I guess.
The trigger point seems to be set at 26psi from the factory (based on my experiences thus far) so either 6 or 7 psi buffer from the stock 32psi tire pressure.

Is that 'Change wheel set' TPMS related or is that tire size related?

I’m thinking that most people who go to 285s buy LT tires that need more than 32 PSI, so they don’t run into this problem.

I agree, there is probably a smaller group of 285 owners that chose P/SL rating, but they do exist. Either they came across the issue and ignored it or didn't see this thread.

Lets go back... 26psi is simply too low.

Your chalk test needs another go. The factory OEM tires, whatever they might have been have nothing to do with anything other than what that brand/make/model tire was that came with your rig. Having said that, my experience with 285's run between 30-36psi for C load tires. Slightly higher for D and E, depending on weight of the vehicle and make/brand/model/load rating of the current tire. I am guessing you have a C load? Either way, your MPG and tire wear will like you a lot more at 30-36psi unless you have stripped about 500-1,000 lbs of weight form the vehicle.

And make sure you are chalk testing the rears, not the front as alignment will affect outcomes.

Agree, I’ve been running E load tires with nearly 40 psi.

SL (standard load) tires, not C load. Below is a screenshot from an online calculator ( ) confirming my chalk test.

Aside from the tires, I'd like to know if there is a way to reprogram the TPMS pressure threshold. Other Toyota/Lexus vehicles have a TPMS pressure reset button under the dash but the 4Runner does not. 2020+ 4Runners seem to have a reset in the gauge cluster. I have not had a chance to go through Techstream but I expect all pre-2020 4Runner would be similar (if anyone with Techstream wants to check).

Assuming techstream is a mech/dealer ODBII diagnostic program?
Can you use Torque or Carista to do this or other adjustments to sensors?

Just out of curiosity, and without meaning to sound condescending, have you checked the owners manual?

Techstream is the Toyota/Lexus diagnostic program but some owners are able to get it somehow. I don't have the Carista app but it would be great is someone who has it can check.

I did go through the owner manual but nothing about resetting the low trigger for pressure. The manual refers to TPMS as Tire Pressure Warning System if anyone cares to search for themselves. The only place I can see this being resolved is through Techstream but the owner manual does not indicate what options can be changed through the Techstream program.

The guy in this video goes through the entire feature set of the Carista app. However, he indicates within the first minute that Techstream is needed for the TPMS system. Sorry.

Thanks for the video. This is something I am wanting for an upcoming 18,000 mile roundtrip from Texas to Patagonia and back. I had something similar with my JKU, but it also allowed me to adjust just about everything in the vehicle. Seatbelt chime, locks, chimes, TPMS thresholds, tire size, gear changes, plus monitor every sensor it had, but it ran on CANBUS which is easier to manipulate.
