Toyota is pouring a further $8bn into its battery manufacturing plant in North Carolina, in the largest such investment by a foreign carmaker since the US passed the Inflation Reduction Act in 2022.

The newly announced funding would take the Japanese group’s investment in the plant — one of its largest outside Japan — to about $13.9bn by 2030. It would also add about 3,000 jobs to the site it calls the “epicentre of lithium-ion battery production in North America”, bringing the total to more than 5,000.

Where Electric Batteries are being made in the US

One-at-this-price stripper. Bought new 34 yrs ago, a $13K leftover. Added Detroit TruTrac, 1”rear spring spacer and “pinstripes”… Factory AC kit and roof rack bought at dealer cost at time of purchase, still blows ice cold 32yrs later. 2022 AG ORP all stock.
    Without better charging infrastructure?

Do y'all not have mains power at your house? Most people buy EVs for local driving.

Actually, probably not. I’d guess most people live in apartments, especially near or in cities where ev’s make most sense. Only some people can charge at home.

But that’s besides the point, regarding this news, because Toyota’s main products are hybrids.

Shrockworks sliders & rear bumper, Toytec 3/2 lift, ARB diff mod, 8 pod RGB LED's, RCI steel front skids, Big Sky katana rack, Reese roof rack, cool stickers.
New technologies typically advance on multiple fronts at once. That is not a reason to avoid new tech. Good luck, coordinating everything to finish at the same time. This is not a RTS game.

Have you been to a town or city lately at night and see how many cars are parked on the street overnight?

As someone who lives and works in NC, it’s getting crazy here. We have a double edged sword issue. Regardless of what kind of company it is, there have been new companies moving and building all over NC for years. I’m in Raleigh, and we have so much growth, it’s impossible to find people like maintenance techs, engineers, etc. There’s a ton of ev’s around, but if you’re in an apartment, you certainly aren’t buying one. Bring it on Toyota. Everyone else is. ‍

I looked into getting an L2 charger installed for one of my garages. It would run about $3.5k. California.

I am glad I had a 220 outlet put in the garage during initial construction for my welder. Did not realize at the time could do double duty for a charger.

Yep. If I ever build a custom house, I'm putting a 220 in every garage slot, as well as extra outlets on every garage wall and ceiling.

I'm in the middle of the Gulf of Mexico of mexico drilling deepwater oil wells as I type this. I'm all for a better Earth and taking care of it. But EV's are terrible. Still takes massive amount of hydrocarbons to even start the process of making EV transportation. We're way to early to try to roll over to a EV world yet.........
