I have over 40k miles on my Open Country AT2 tires, and after way too many butt clinching moments on these tires in the rain. Today I had to put it in 4 wheel drive just to get traction at a stoplight, Ive hydroplaned and drifted corners at slow speeds. My father had the same issues when he had his Tundra. Ive done some research and it seems to be a common issue even when you still have lots of tread left on them.

My question is I'm leaning with with the old reliable KO2, those who have had them are they decent in the rain, or is there a better tire? My only priority is they come in 285/70/17, load E range.

I’m admittedly bias and love my 285/70/17 KO2’s.

I drive around 65 miles a day and always feel confident in the tires.

Regarding rain - The only issue I’ve had in rain is serious standing water in grooved pavement at high speeds but nothing where I felt really unsafe or out of control.

I went with “C” rated for a little softer ride.

I paid $960 out the door for a set of “4” from Discount Tire - not sure if that’s a good price…

I’ve heard a lot of people speak highly about Wildpeak but I don’t have personal experience with those.

    good luck!

The Toyo AT3 is supposed to be much better than the AT2 in wet conditions. I have been happy with mine.

KO2's are a good all-around tire. I have heard complaints about wet traction. I didn't experience any problems.

Yeah I had Toyo AT3’s and they were awesome! Great in the snow and never had problems in the rain. Granted I didn’t have them but for 7k miles before I sold them for my bigger more aggressive tires.

I'll follow as I am in the same boat, so to speak. Don't get a lot of snow, but it rains and rains. I'm looking for a wet weather tire same spec's as you but I could do 'C' rating.

Thanks for the suggestions so far, Ive heard about some complaints on the KO2s in the rain, but nothing like it being on ice like my tires are.

As for the AT3, ive heard they are suppose to fix the rain issue, but no one has had them long enough to see long term if they hold up. The AT2 had zero issues, until you put 40-50k miles on them.

I've been running General Grabber ATX for about 20K miles, and I'm happy with them. No issues with the rain or standing water, and they're good in the snow as well.

I have K02’s and they just hit 38,000 on them. They are getting bad in rain and I will be buying something different soon.

I have been considering Firestone destination at’s.

the ONLY tire I use in our 4 season climate is the Falken Wildpeak AT3W...after having the KO2's, which are highly overrated, IMO, and the Toyo AT II's, I'll never have any of them but Falkens going forward. Absolute best in snow and rain...quiet and last a long time. But, tires are subjective so...:)

K02's are the greasiest tire I've ever owned in the rain

40-50k miles sounds like a good tire lifespan for an AT tire. If you had zero issues up until then, I'd be a happy consumer.

For variety, Ive run a number of tires now, here are some thoughts:

-stock road Dunlop/Michelins: iffy in anything but dry road wear
-BFG KO2s: OK on road, pretty decent off road besides proper mud or deep snow
-GY Duratrac: hands down worst tire Ive run, not good as soon as the road is wet, loud as all hell, OK off road at best. Only time I legit didnt feel safe if it werent dry out
-Falken Wildpeak AT3: good on road, no change in sure footing when wet, good off road including some snow and mud
-Cooper Discoverer STMAXX: hands down favorite tire, not louder than Wildpeaks despite being more aggressive, safest Ive felt with tires, not once did I lose traction on or off road save for slick ice

Considering I still have 30-40k of tread left on them im highly disappointed. Not to mention the rock chips and there horrid capability to clean out from mud and snow.

I’ve been running the Falken Wildpeak AT3W the last 35k miles and they have been great in every environment. I’ve ran KO2s in the past and I’ll say that I would rather have the Falkens.

weird. I've never gotten more than 45,000 miles out of any tire in my entire life. further, any tire that claims exceedingly long tread life is probably too hard for my taste anyways.

true, but with load E range they are all going to be kinda hard lol. My tires now have some signs of age, small cracks between the treads and almost 6 years since the manufacture date.

The age is probably more of the problem; the cracking shows they've gotten brittle and less flexible, so probably less sticky as well.

That said, I had highway Toyo's on my Tacoma, and they were the worst tire I've ever had for traction, dry or wet (I'd rather have the stock Dunlops). That may be just the tire model I had, but it put me off from Toyo's in the future.

Also jumped on the Wildpeak wagon recently, and they're good, but only ~4k miles so far.

Any noticeable mpg drop with the Wildpeaks and can you feel the extra weight of the tires when driving?

there are some threads on here about difficulties balancing the Falken Wildpeak AT3Ws. i like the way they look, but find that problem concerning.

Wildpeaks are relatively heavy for any given size, and have a more aggressive tread than stock, so I would definitely expect some mpg loss.

I lost 1.5-ish going from stock tires to stock size P rated Grabber ATX.

For every complaint thread, there's probably 10000 people who haven't had problems, but don't feel the need to post success threads. I've had 285 AT3W's on my Runner since new. No problems balancing, and they've been excellent year round here in Colorado. Rain, ice, snow, dry - fantastic tires, and I even have one that was made in China. @afret, I can't comment on the mpg drop or weight as I don't have a reference point from stock tires.

Like @Schlappesepple said, they might be getting too old. I think somewhere around 5 years is the maximum life, regardless of tread depth.

So true! That why KO2's have such a high rating, despite the handful of people who have been dissatisfied. Even the precious Wildpeaks have had some complaints.

I guess I'm lucky I haven't face balancing issues with Falken Wildpeak AT3W, Multiple KO2s, GY Wrangler Duratracs. May be the Discount Tire shop I go to is good (i guess). I know many hates KO2 with ice and some complains with hydroplaning, I guess either I'm lucky or a safe driver not to experience these issues here in CO. I'm little surprise to hear anything bad about Toyo OC AT2 / AT3 unless the tires are worn. I've seen people say they are better than KO2 (I could be wrong).

Did you drive today? Finally got some snow..!! Loved it except for been scared people rear end me having bad tires and not knowing safe distance to brake..

I keep bouncing back and forth on which tire I should get. I need to get on the who gives a crap about mpg mindset. I'm going to use Trail Edition wheels so the +15 offset should let me get the bigger 265 tires like Wildpeaks or M/T Baja Boss A/T without rubbing. I'm ready to go to Discount Tire but waiting on the ORP to get here so I can find out if my TPMS tool can read the 2022 sensors so I can clone a set of sensors and get them on the wheels. Some on this forum said the '22 4R sensors are different.

I don't have the patience to try out tire after tire. I'm hoping to get it right the first time around.

Right now my order of preference is:

    1 - Toyo Open Country AT3 Load C
    2a - General Grabber ATX Load C
    2b - Falken Wildpeak AT3W SL
    2c - BFG KO2 Load C
    3 - everything else

If you get the Mickeys, I want a review! I'm considering them as my next "winter" set.

Nothing wrong with being concerned about MPG. I suppose if you don't drive much it wouldn't matter as much.

You like snow? You must not have to do a lot of snow moving/shoveling. :) I used to like it when I was into skiing but now I hate the stuff. Got to plow/blow the driveway, shovel the deck, knock snow off the roof (of the house, pole barn, and shop), and since my next door neighbor has a medical issue, I do his driveway too which is about 1/4 mile long after every storm. :( I guess I've just become old. LOL

I only love driving in snow and snow wheeling on easy trails that is less likely to fall off a cliff..:D:D

With my clumsy behavior things like skiing is a big no no. I'm more likely to hit a tree or fall off a cliff.. No kidding I got struck by lightning(a little shock) going out to capture lightning manually. Camera body and flash light were metal those days.

I'm a lazy A** and only clean the walk way so no one will slip on ice. I don't clean the driveway. I'm an island boy from a tropical country, I will freeze staying outside more than 30min. Lucky we don't have to clean the roof and deck here in Denver CO. At max we will get 2 feet of snow and melt pretty fast.
