I just recently bought a 1997 toyota 4runner to turn into an off road rig. I am at the point now that I am trying to figure out tires for the vehicle. I have already installed a 3in rough country lift. I would like to run super swamper boggers but want to know what's the best tire size to go with. I would like to run the 33 12.5 r16 but I'm afraid that the tire will be way to wide. I can also get 33 10.5 r16 but I worred about the tire being to skinny at that point. What do you guys think the best option would be and also what would be involved to run the 12.5 on a stock rim. Obviously I would need spacers for the 12.5 to fit but will the spacers be enough.

33x10.5 is perfect (with a bit of minor work) for these trucks; 12.5 is getting too wide (and you'll have a bear of a time with rubbing). Also, putting a 12.5" on stock rims (which are 7") is really wider than you should go. Some shops might do it, others won't. For a 12.5" tire, you really want 8" or wider rims.

To run 12.5" wide tires, you're going to need spacers to keep things off the suspension and frame, and then you're going to need to do the pinch weld mod + a bunch of hammering (and maybe some cutting) to the outer rear corner of the fender area. You can read more about what affects fit (and the solutions) here: What size tires fit my lifted Tacoma/4Runner?

This is on a 1st gen Tacoma, but it's essentially the same as a 4Runner from this perspective. These are 33x10.5 R17 Kenda Klever RTs on stock Sequioa rims:

And here are 255/85 R16 Cooper S/T Maxx on stock 4Runner rims:

And, here are 32x10.5 (actually, 265/75 R16 Goodyear Duratracs) on stock 4Runner wheels:

I ran 33x10.5r15 on mine and thought it was perfect. It rubbed the pinch weld but a little hammering took care of that.
