Timing belt tensioner

    My tensioner seems fine, no oil seepage and the piston pressure is fine. But I measure it at about 11.5 mm, while FSM says it should be 10.0 to 10.8

    I can't imagine this will cause a problem if I reuse it, but do you know differently? I had no troubles with the old belt, in fact it had about twice the recommended miles on it since the last change.

    Also why do they say never to let the piston point down? Its not going to fall out even in hand, and it has been upside down at least twice when my 4runner rolled lol.

    Always change the tensioner. It may go longer, but is it really worth saving a few bucks if it fails.

    Never heard of that. Sounds like a myth. Tensioners are shipped and stored any which way.

    Its straight out of the FSM:
    NOTICE:
    Never hold the tensioner push rod facing downward.
