My 2017 4 Runner just turned 99K. The dealership wants at least 4K to replace it( not including a water pump if needed). Any advice/experience one way or another on replacing it or just let it be? I don't tow anything, don't go off roading ect. Drive it on trips, around town, and dirt/gravel roads while hunting. nothing extreme. Use 4 wheel drive in snow as needed, which isn't a huge amount. My personal trustworthy mechanic won't do it because its to involved. It runs great, no issues. I'm all ears!

Stay away from that dealer and mechanic. Your 4Runner has a timing chain not a belt. No need to replace it.

    Birddog,
The 4.0L v6 engine in the 5th Generation 4Runner does not have a timing belt, it has an internal timing chain which normally never needs replacement.

Did the dealership really say the Serpentine Belt needed replacement?

Even so, if it is the Sepentine Belt, that runs between $7 & $20 depending on what brand you prefer on RockAuto.

So yeah... like TF said, get away from that place. They are trying to shamelessly rip you off.

They should go to jail... Everyone above clarified that you don't even have a timing belt already. So... About the serpentine belt, that's your alternator, AC compressor, etc. It doesn't need replaced at 100k either. Not a chance - unless it's sat in the hot sun every single day and is frayed. You can look at it and see if it's frayed.

Otherwise call us back at 200k. And don't set foot in that stealership again. They are dishonest.

Why does your dealership want to replace your timing chain when it runs great, has no issues? You need to leave that place and never, ever return.

You should change the serpentine belt at 100k, wear or no wear.

Correct. Inspect at 60k but change that out at 100k regardless. Cheap insurance.

I just changed mine at 230,000 miles for the first time and it looked like i could have probably got another 100,000 out of it.
Had a thermostat housing leak, looked at everything i needed to remove to fix it, decided to do
    1) water pump
    1) thermostat housing and gasket
    1) fan clutch
    1) A/C compressor
    1) serpentine belt
    1) belt tensioner
    1) all new Toyota Long Life coolant
Figured if i was going to pull all the crap off the front of the engine, might as well replace some replaceable things before they go bad, after all it did have 230,000+ on all of them
I say all that to say this, none of those items were giving me any troubles but i replaced them due to me being there, and having the money to do it now rather than let it nickel and dime me over the next 2-3 years as those things would likely finally start wearing out one by one.

I don't know about you, but I inspect mine at every oil change (5K). It's so easy to do... I changed it out at 175K. It still had life left in it, so I keep it in my emergency repair kit as as a backup. Doubt I'll ever need it, but you know, "just in case".

Just like one can go about doing 15000 miles oil changes because the oil is Full Synthetic and it says on the bottle good for 20000 miles, it is prudent to do it every 5k to 10k.
Similarly, I am not denying you cannot push the belt beyond 200k, but it is advisable to simply replace at 100,000.
But that's just me, you do you.

The 4Runner belt is really wide. It lasts a long time. This isn’t one of the crappy V-belts of the past that wore out quickly and would be heard squealing as the wore out.

Agree with this. And hold on to the old one. I changed one of ours at 70k but only because it was my daughters and she lives 600 miles from me. Good insurance policy and cheap and easy to do.
