Tacoma to 4Runner

I am another convert from a 2017 Tacoma TRD Sport 4X4 to a 2020 4 Runner 4X4. Got tired of the constant hunting for a gear in the Tacoma and traded it in for a 4Runner. Only 100 miles on it so far but there is a noticeable difference. I will be lurking and reading but do not post very often.

 

I did the same but traded my 15 Sport Tacoma on 17 Pro 4runner and now 2020 Pro 4runner. No regrets. Read up on so many not liking the newer Tacoma hunting for gears. Even my salesman told me Toyota should have left the Tacoma alone.

Me too, Tacoma needs new drivetrain and brakes.

 

I own both, 2018 Tacoma Pro and 2019 4Runner Pro; Pros and cons with both. I agree with the consensus, fewer issues with the 4Runner. The Tacoma had 3 warranty claims already.

 

I’m driving ‘18 Taco Sport and ‘19 4ROR. Good and not so good to both..
I don’t really off-road so I only see half the equation.
I figure you gotta spend more to expect more.

2008 4runner sr5 ->2017 tacoma off road -> 2019 tacoma trd pro -> now 2020 4runner trd pro and 2001 tacoma trd off road (135,000 mils ),this tacoma better then 2019 trd pro tacoma i,m very happy ......

I went from a 2012 Tacoma TRD Sport 2wd to a 2017 Tacoma TRD Sport 4wd and now a 2020 TRD Pro 4Runner. I loved my 2012 Tacoma and only traded because I wanted 4wd. I loved the 2017 after OV Tune. I was going to get a 2020 Tacoma but realized my boys are getting to big for the back seat so I went with the 4R. I’m loving the Runner so far!

 

I have been living in the TacomaWorld since 2005. I had a 2005 TRD Off Road and then got a 2016 TRD Sport 4WD that I traded last week for a 2020 TRD Off Road Premium. This is the first time in 25 years that I have not had a truck. So far, I am loving the 4Runner and my list of things I want to do to it is growing.

 

Same here Gravel.... Have owned 5 Tacos over the years. Traded a 2019 Tacoma TRD OR for current 4runner. Never looking back. Love it. Its a shame about current version of the Taco though. Beautiful truck. Until you drive it. My opinion.

 

I think it’s crazy to trade a brand new vehicle for another’ but I did the same. Bought a 2019 Tacoma Trd OR dbcb long bed AT. It felt like it was misfiring at lower rpms like a cyclical vibration. Had it checked and Toyota said it was some Atkinson cleaning cycle, even parked at idle that timed vibration was present. The brakes were touchy and it was a very uncomfortable ride and the head wind gear shifting killed me. I ran my numbers in my financial life planning and traded that 3rd gen Tacoma for a 2020 4Runner SR5 premium. Love it, it has power when I press the pedal, I don’t have to count to 3 anymore before it takes off. It’s just built great, feels great to drive, very happy with it. On paper it lists that the mpg is worse than the 3rd gen Tacoma, but I’m getting 3mpg more with the 4.0L 4Runner. Having owned a 3rd gen Tacoma I won’t buy another, instead I am thinking when my son is of age, we will build out a 2nd gen tacoma. Or, find a 3rd gen without an engine nor transmission if those exist and put a 4.0L or diesel 4 in it as a growth skills project for us. Has anyone done that other than a company that converts to diesel for $40k?

 

This is exactly why I'm selling my Highlander right now to get into a 4Runner. Same problem with the Highlander not knowing what gear it wants to be in.

 

Really? I enjoy driving my wife’s Highlander and don’t find it hunts for gears. It definitely shifts more than the 4Runner but I don’t find it very different when on hilly highways. I love my 4Runner and would buy another in a heart beat however the transmission is clunky and lagging just like my 2nd gen Tacoma. It’s the nature of the beast and don’t have a care in the world to it in regards. For daily driving and long treks the Highlander has a better drivetrain hands down. Now towing and seriously loaded...different story. The 4Runner is much more sluggish on city streets and highways...it’s not going to be worlds better. I tow a decent amount, drive in blizzards, and simply wanted a “real” SUV that had more room than a double cab Tacoma for car seats.

 

Yea, so far my experience with the Highlander's transmission has not been great. I'd rather have the 4.0L like I had in my 2nd gen Taco when I had that.

 

I agree with you there...the 4.0 2nd gen Tacoma is the best out of all of them. I would tow in cruise control and there were times the transmission didn’t shift for over an hour.

 

i'm in the same boat, just traded out my 2016 Tacoma dc trd sport for a 2020 4runner off-road, will received it late march, can't wait.

Need more space for kids and doesn't like much the transmission on the Tacoma, exept the transmission, i've love my tacoma!

Same situation here traded my 2016 taco sport for the 2020 4Runner off road. I've always thought my taco was under powered. Hence constantly up and down shifting. Yet the engine has more horsepower. Can't really compare the two vehicles yet, still breaking in the 4Runner.

 

Have 19 4runner ORP and a 17 tacoma dclb. Tacoma is much better after the computer update. I think the 4runner is better quality and I like the 5 speed more.

 

I went from a 14 off road taco to a 19 SR5, I wanted a better ride, and the issues with the transmission were worrying. The 4runner rides a lot better to me plus the back window is nice.

 

I’m getting better mpg in my 4runner than I did in my 2018 Tacoma. Especially on the highway.
