    Hi all,

I am about to sign for a 23 ORP 52k miles in lunar rock (referenced on another thread here asking if it’s a good deal).

the rear differential wouldn’t engage when on test drive but then when back at dealer lot It did after I shifted from N to D.

Is it normal to be sticky like this? Or is this because the previous owner didn’t use it for 22 months? with regular use will this be a non issue? Or is it a repair needed thing?

I have a 12 month warranty so not tooo worried. Wanted to ask here though

    thanks!

    Thanks

2H to 4H was no problem and 4H to 4L was no problem either. It was just getting the diff lock to engage when in 4L… the first time I tried for several minutes and it would not engage… the second time it engaged pretty much right away after I hit diff lock and shifted into drive.

probably should go test again like you said?

yes it’s a lot of miles… He used it for work in the first 10 months that he had it. Put on about 30,000 miles. Then drove it normally for the next year + after that.

While in 4wd low, hit the locker and drive forward while turning the steering wheel side to side. Splines have to line up. Same goes for disengaging.

^ That's what I do. Works every time. And the steering wheel only needs to turn, like from 12 o'clock to 2 o'clock.

The thread title and the first post were a bit confusing, as there was no mention of the differential locker, just the diff.

OK, I misunderstood you were referring to rear locker. Sorry about that.

Yep. I just assumed OP was referring to 2H to 4H and didn't want to be "that guy".
My bad. deleted my first post so the thread flows better.

I was assuming the same thing, but couldn't figure out why the rear diff, as that is always engaged...

My guess is you're good from here on out. I bet there's a lot of 4Runners that never even get put into 4L for 100k miles.
