Hey guys! I need some help. My 1998 4Runner is having starter issues. I had her idling and turned her off. And tried turning her back on. She wouldn’t Turn over. no click no nothing. So I figured it was the starter relay. Put in a new one and nothing. I broke off the cap off the relay and pressed the switch and she started right up. Anyone have an idea what could keep the relay from turning on?

Any corrosion where the relay plugs in?

Bad ignition switch has been known to cause a non-start like this.

You need a new starter. I've replaced 4 in my 2005 SR5 with 150,000 miles. They lasted 4 years each - including the OEM that came with the car. AM OK from Amazon.

Every time I got a no crank issue and replaced with a new starter, the starter issue disappeared for 4 years.

She starts right up when my relay is actived. Starter has no issue cranking the engine. Her hey just won’t turn her on. I can kick starter her since she’s a manual. But no click or anything trying to turn her key

Locate the Black/Red wire at the neutral safety switch and check to see if there is battery voltage during crank. If there is battery voltage, then disconnect the neutral safety switch and jump the Black/Red to the Black/White wire and then check to see if the engine will start. If the engine starts, the neutral safety switch is faulty. If the engine does not start, then locate the junction connector 3 behind the combination meter and check to see if there is a poor connection.

Procedures: 1. At the starter relay check to see if there is battery voltage present at terminal 5 of the relay at all times.

    2. During crank check to see if terminal 1 gets battery voltage.

    3. Check to see if the relay clicks when the engine is cranked.

    4. At the park neutral switch check for power at the Black wire at pin 6 with the ignition key in the start position.

    5. At the park neutral safety switch jump pin 6 Black/White wire to pin 5 Black wire. Check to see if the engine cranks over.
Here is a tip: Check the 7.5 amp STA fuse in the under hood fuse box this should have 12 volts with the ignition switch in the start position. The starter relayis also in the underhood fuse box.
