Sport vs ORD Prem

    I've noted the following mechanical/performance differences (vs cosmetic):
    • wheels/tires
    • skid plate
    • locking rear
    Am I missing anything meaningful? If I was going to put TRD wheels and a skidplate on a Sport would the only real difference be absence of the locking rear? With the 17" wheels would the clearance and approach angles be the same between the two trims?

    I have an ORD Prem on order but might be able to get into a Sport much sooner.

    Pinstripes, lots of em. Plus a couple dents.
    If you plan on going off road - get the locking rear differential. It makes a huge difference off road.

    I would stay away from Sport simply due to all issues with xreas suspension

    and from searching dealerships online, it appears that the markets are being flooded with Sports and Limiteds, but not so much with other trims.

    We cannot say that. Just like KDSS some XREAS owners put good miles with out any leaks. XREAS ride well too and if XREAS fail you can put any shock. Even stock SR5 to expensive King shocks. Anything...:):)

    I don't understand why TRD Sport exists. Budget wise I would just get SR5 Premium. It comes with same 4x4 system, 17in wheels, no low hanging bumpers and side trim panels, etc..

    For better offroad with mods like lift and skids I would get TRD ORP w/o KDSS.

    For better offroad as is I would get TRD ORP with KDSS.

    I made my comment based mostly on AMD the Car Care nut video. He did not have much good to say about Xreas. Just my opinion I drew after research here.

    If you won't be doing much off-roading, the locker isn't necessary. If you will, I would wait.

    The manual transfer case is nice, but still relies on electronics to engage the front differential.

    If none of that matters to you, go drive the Sport. If you like it, get it! :)

    One other thought is my money is on the ORP maintaining its residual value much better than Sport as the years go by.

    I think this is why you see more Sports and Limiteds available now.

    But for sure If you like it get it.

    It's definitely something to consider. If you want to keep it for the life of the vehicle, it's an expensive maintenance item.

    But, like @kmeeg mentioned, they can be swapped out for regular shocks when they wear out.

    But if you like to take it on trails without making too much mods I would suggest to skip Sport / Limited. I don't like the low hanging bumper and trim pieces. Some may disagree but I don't feel comfortable taking the Limited vs TRD ORP.

    No disrespect to TRD Sport owners but if anyone haven't decide yet I say don't buy TRD Sport.

    It definitely limits your options for sliders and bumpers. But, I would totally buy a Limited for street use and mild off-roading. Plus, there are some bad-ass Limited builds around here.

    I've been off roading for over 20 years without a rear locker and have never been stuck.

    I guess I'm just lucky. ;)

    I remember I was using good old left foot braking when I got my 4R but got lazy now and let Atrac do its job. Love using atrac so I don't loose my skill entirely. Only using lockers when I'm scared when there's not much room.

    When it rains there's mud. That's why they call it off road.

    The 1st principle of Tread Lightly is to go through / over the obstacle (mud, rocks, etc) instead of around it.

    All shocks wear-out and the Xreas system can go 100k miles plus - when it does fail you can easily take if off and install Bilstein 5100's.
    I have a couple of 4R's (2021 TRD ORP and 2019 Limited) and my wife and I looked at the Sport as a new SUV for her. It's not a bad choice if your in the market for a Limited.
    I kind of like the TRD / Limited / SR5 mix. It gives it a sporty look compared to all the chrome on a limited.
    I like that everything is body colored matching and the gray accent stitching is a nice touch that breaks up the interior compared to the SR5's all black softtex seating.
    One of the things Toyota missed on the US version of the Sport is you can't get a moonroof.
    The Canadian model of the Sport's have a moonroof option but it's not on the US build sheets.
    Also a manually operated passenger seat in 2022 is bit of a why???

    Good luck finding one without a moon roof. Since Canada is small market compared to the US all they ship to us Canucks are premium models. I'm 6'ft7" and wanted one without the moonroof for the headroom. Nope not happening. Hence my 2022 TRD ORP with moonroof. Couldn't even special order it. Take it or leave it. Story of my life make it fit. L.O.L.

    Even in US I could not find a TRD ORP no KDSS + heated seats + no moon roof.
    There were only TRD OR (non premium) with no heated seats + no moonroof.

    When I check now only 2 out of 12 TRD ORP come with no KDSS and all 12 has moon roof.

    Should have would have made way more money than being a mechanic. What do they say about hindsight being 20/20. Basketball might have worked as well. Sigh all I got was a bad back for my efforts.:(

    I use the locker in the rocks more than in the mud.

    The manual says to only use the locker at low speeds (<5 MPH). This is useless in mud, unless you can cut through to solid ground underneath.

    I don't get having the Limited looks without having the main feature of a Limited - full time 4WD. IMO, most prefer the non-Limited look, but will live with the bumpers & low-hanging rockers (or change them out) in order to have the 4WD (and creature comforts) of the Limited.

    Umm...

    It will work at higher speeds / higher rpms.
    Call it 7mph to 15mph.

    Was down in Arkansas at the Rendezvous in Ozarks Overland / Off Road Rally. There was mile long strip of knee high mud to our group's campsite. I didn't want to be that guy that gets stuck in the mud at an overland / off road rally. There were a few that did. 1st time through it, I was in 4 high going about 15mph. Following times I dropped it into 4 low, locker, + Atrac and plowed through at 7 to 15mph.
