I just got a 2022 sr5 with the stock speakers. I was curious of what people think of them or know about them. Are they paper or foam? I know I can improve upon them but is it worth doing since it is brand new?

I swapped out all of mine. Mine was paper for sure. Stock speakers are ok, but the sound now with the new speakers are super clean and crisp and just gives me peace of mind knowing I have quality speakers now.

not too sure whats in a 2022, but my 2020 speakers are junky, but replacement speakers are not high on the MOD list...

Sliders & Skid Plates are at the top of the list right now.

The overall factory sound system is pretty weak.

They are not "that bad".... Insert Boston girls meme here... Oh YAAAHHHH HAAADAA!!!!
    :D

But any factory sound system is going to be built for cost effectiveness for mass production rather than overall sound quality.
You can go spend $300 and replace all 8 speakers and I bet it will sound 10 times better...

If you're an audiophile you'll want better, but they are perfectly fine and I listen to a lot of music. They are night and day better than the ones in my '13 Camaro SS and my GF's '20 CRV. They sound like transistor radios by comparison.

I can’t speak for the 4runner, but I replaced the speakers in our 21 Rav4 Prime and it is way better. And that was maybe 300 bucks.

I used to be really into car stereos. When my stuff was stolen at the dealer I replaced my pioneer and jbl speakers with Boston acoustics component sets. I have slacked off since then and just had stock stereos. After having my old pathfinder looked at I saw my paper speaker cones had rotted 1/2 away. I am a music oriented person so I figure it may be good to look into upgrading the speakers eventually. I am running a sirius lifetime plan off my phone and have about 100gb of music and concerts on it. I bought a 500gb usb to use but didn't realize my sr5 only has 1 usb media port. It will come in handy for when my cell service is spotty. I don't want to link my plan to the 4runner since swapping radios is how they try to end your lifetime plan. I have been looking on crutchfield to see what speakers fit to plan upgrades. I know there are much better speaker options than stock.

I upgraded the speakers in my 2020 SR5P. Omg they are complete junk. Good enough to listen to talk radio but other than that they suck REALLY REALLY bad. The magnet is the size of a quarter and possibly as big as a 1/2 dollar. The new ones weigh 5x’s as much because of the magnet and makes a drastic difference when listening for clean crisp audio or turning it up with the windows down.

The usual suggestion is the OEM Audio+ system - https://oemaudioplus.com/toyota/4runner/ - I have the basic speaker upgrade kit, and it's a huge improvement over the stock stuff.

There is a very in depth thread on here that starts out with tweeter upgrades and goes through alternative solutions to the over priced oem audio+ or tacotunes. Just search for it.

Awesome kit. I have the single sub system and it sound great but I would like more bass. The second sub is available but you lose tie down points so you love drawer options.

Does anyone know how deep I can go with door speakers without interfering with the windows? I have been looking at infinity kappa speakers or jbl club speaker options. Jbl offers some shallow options but not sure if I need to worry about the depth. Thanks.

I have the Sony speakers (neighbor works for them and had them in stock and gave me a good deal on the speakers plus installation). I got 8 new speakers installed with custom brackets for $300-$350 and he worked on my car most of the day. I don’t know the exact models he installed but omg what a night and day difference over stock.
