Just purchased a Gen 5. Looking to upgrade speakers and add an amp. My last vehicle had kicker 200.4 and kicker speaker upgrade with factory head unit. It was significantly better. Used bass blockers on the dash speakers and a plugnplay wiring harness. Suggestions, recommendations and advice appreciated.

Personally I'd start with setting a budget, a general target "level" of upgrade (similar to the basic amp/speaker setup of your previous vehicle... or better?), if you're willing to do the install yourself, are you willing to buy used gear, how custom you'd like to go, how much space are you willing to give up for sub(s), do you like to tinker or set it/forget it, etc.

A few companies make some so called plug and play kits but in my opinion youll be paying significantly more for something a site like crutchfield can assist with for a fraction of the cost. Too bad you didn't post a week or so ago, there were some great sales.

Popular on the 4runner forums are drop in coax replacements from infinity, kicker, and kenwood... TBH I wasn't too thrilled with any of those. For a warm sound I've always like the Morel Maximos in the front doors but I dont think they make a 3.5" for the dash. For a more neutral sound Hertz DCX line (3.5" and 6x9"). I'm not a fan of bright tweets but many like the Focal integration line, but then again at that price there are tons of better options.

A couple things to note: if your 5th gen came with the JBL setup you'll need extra adapters, the dash speaker locations only have about 1.5" of depth clearance unless youre willing to cut things up, the front doors easily accommodate 8-9" speakers. Pls be forewarned that many on the forums had trouble getting any external amp setup to sound good off the stock head unit.

Let us know if you're ready to step up to an active 2way or 3way setup with DSP. We'll gladly drop some recommendations.
