Spare Tire

Hi, I was recently gifted a 1990 4 runner by my grandpa and I had a small question, where can I find and what do I need to be able to drop the full spare that’s underneath the rear

Welcome. Hopefully your truck still has it. The jack and tools necessary for dropping the spare should be stowed underneath the seats in the back row. You're looking for a rod with a hook on one end that's about 3ft long. You will also need the 90° piece that's with the other tools, likely in a small black bag stowed probably in one of the side panels in the trunk. It'll look something like this.

With the long hook and the 90° piece, you can drop the spare by inserting the long piece into a hole near the license plate and spinning the hook in the tire carrier. You might have to crawl under to help put the hook where it needs to go. This isn't an accurate pic, but gives you the idea.

It also depends on what size tires your vehicle came with originally. If it came with 31's then the long rod needs to go in at an angle thru the slot above the bumper into a box on the passenger side. You will see it if you look underneath the vehicle. If it came with 225's then the rod goes straight in to a box located right above the tire.

 

Super helpful, when cleaning out all the trash I found those but they were just scattered everywhere, now I know what they’re for and I was able to successfully drop the spare tire. Thanks for the super helpful information
