I’ve been driving my wife’s pilot for a while so maybe that’s why I feel this way but i swear I feel the 4Runners steering is much slower with more play. Is this normal?

Different cars are going to feel different.

My alignment was off from factory. Yours could be.

I moved from a Buick Lucerne to a 4Runner, it feels looser and slower to me as well. I just chalked it up to being a difference between vehicle functions. One is designed for touring, the other is utilitarian.

More turns of the steering wheel from lock to lock means more mechanical advantage and less stress on the steering components, which is good for an off-road vehicle on uneven terrain.
