Anyone hear a single click when they start to drive after turning on car? Happens exactly at 4mph. Rav4 and other models say abs self check happens at 4 mph..but I couldn't find anything for 4runners...

I am very glad you asked this question because I thought I was hearing things. Yes I hear a click and then something that sounds like a valve release...its very slight and it seems to me that its coming from the rear.

Noticed this also. Can't find the thread, however per that thread, the noise is coming from a relay that is associated with the anti-lock brake system and/or the electrics associated with the brakes near the firewall and/or under the dash. I'll set a reminder to ask about it when I go by the dealership tomorrow and post-up what they say.

    Update: Found the thread..

This is different the evap noise is in the rear after its been sitting.

My 2019 Tundra does this at 4-5mph everytime when fist moving after start up. All the Tundra guys say its normal ABS check. I'm going to assume the newer 4Rs have this I just wish it wasn't so loud.

Mine has always made a funky sound from the dash area when I first put it in gear from park.

Kinda like a spring release sound.

I’ve had two 18 T4R, one an OR and the other a Limited. Both do it. It’s normal.

I asked the same question here a few months back. It has gotten louder... I went to the dealership to have them check. They said it was normal, so I asked to drive a similar vehicle... and yes, the sound was there, but mine is louder.... I have videos here I think, i will try to find them and post here..

here is my thread with videos:

Mine does. As soon as I pull out of the drive way I get this noise down in the driver's footwell...every time.

Now that you mention it, I don't remember. Next time I drive it, I will make note and post, if this thread isn't buried by then. ;)

Same noise in my 2020. I even took it to the dealer. It is the ABS. Part of the charm of the 4Runner. That and the clack when shutting down.

While we're talking strange noises, I noticed that when I place the shifter in park, the cog? that engages/locks the transmission in park kinda settles in. You can hear and feel it engage, like it has more play or tolerance than other cars.

This is parking on flat ground.

I believe it is the brake assist motor pressuring the hydraulic cylinder. I found that out when researching why this vehicle has no vacuum brake booster... 4Runners are one of a kind, lol...

    Yes, exactly!

I think it's ok? But the transmission park cog is much more noticeable than other vehicles I have driven.

Having said that, this is the first automatic transmission I have owned in the last 21 years with the exception of the wife's Sequoia which I hardly ever touch.

Wow great job test driving other ones and confirming the sound. May I ask how much softer were the new vehicles compared to your sound? I don't think it matters at all tbh, but just curious. If there were a problem the abs light would be on.

Tried this morning, that springy click sound from behind the dash happens once I put the car in "D" drive and moved forward from backing out of the garage.

Mine was twice as loud than the one I test drove. I remember hearing that softer sound when my runner was new. The one I drove is a new vehicle form the lot.

It's a 4runner, the moment it stops making noise is the time to be concerned.
