Hi Everyone. Recently retired and shopping for a newer(22-23) 4runner. My hope is to take it out west to Colorado and Utah this summer to see some beautiful high passes out there with it.

I'm realizing they are a little hard to find without 40-50k miles on a 1 year old vehicle! Probably rentals. Thanks for having me.

Welcome from a fellow Michigander! (Harrison Township). Good luck on your search. If I see any in our area, I will send them your way via private message.

You may also consider purchasing a new 4Runner - with such high resale, sometimes the margin between new and used prices isn't that much, and you may appreciate having a brand new 4Runner for just a little more than used. This is the route I went after looking at too many scratched up used ones. Just my $.02.

Welcome and good luck finding what you want! I looked at used ones too last year but ended up buying a 2023 ORP new for MSRP. I think you can get 1-2K off MSRP on a new one now if you shop around a bit. You may have to put down a deposit and wait 1-3 months to get it though. And some dealers will add on a bunch of extras to jack up the price.

There may be some better deals on used ones now than a year ago, but they do seem to hold their value well and most of them were ex-rentals with cloth seats etc. The used prices seemed high to me and buying new allowed me to get pretty much exactly what I wanted - color, trim level, sunroof, KDSS, etc.

The best time to buy any new vehicle is December 31st. Car dealerships break it down to end of year, quarters, months, and even days of the week for best negotiations. Remember never to play on their field and do most of the transaction online prior to going on the lot.

Best of luck and welcome to the forum from Arizona!

Yeah, I did that dance looking for a used one a year ago. I couldn’t believe how a vehicle 2 years old had 50K miles on it and was only $3K less than a new one. I wrote a list of my must have options and purchased new. I see that Phoenix dealers; Avondale Toyota, Earnhardt Toyota, etc. have some good deals on 2023 4Runners with 5% off MSRP. That’s because non-current models get a 5% roll back on invoice. Negotiate on-line, fly out there, pick one out and cruise home in a very cool T4R. They have some TRD ORP’s in Magnetic Gray, which is a discontinued color, my second choice actually. By the way, Welcome to the forum!

I’m very happy with the deal I got in October. $4.5k off MSRP on a new ‘23 ORP with KDSS.

Welcome from RI! Good luck with your search.

I agree with everybody else, if you're only looking for slightly used, I would just go new. The 4Runner is one of a handful of vehicles that makes more sense to buy new.

If you plan on keeping it forever, there's also a value to being the first owner and knowing it's entire maintenance history.

Welcome and merry xmas from the far-left coast. I know it can be challenging to buy a high mileage vehicle, but I've never had an issue with any used rig I bought. I recently added a 2019 4Runner Limited to my gaggle of rolling stock. With 100,890 miles on the clock, consequently it had a sticker price of $29880. I traded in a minty 2012 Dodge Durango with ~136 kmiles, so you could say the 4R was a step up with less miles. What I found was that the big named dealers, Ford, Chevy etc., only stocked newer (2000-2023) used vehicles, the older year models were wholesaled at auctions and snapped up by the mom and pop used car lots. Someone will find my minty Durango at a local lot and hesitate to buy it with 136,000 miles but if they ignored those miles, they would have scored big. I made the swap only because I wanted a 4WD, the Durango was 2WD. Forget about the miles and buy what you can afford. Durango_4Runner.jpg

Have the cash ready to go, but can't find any TRD that aren't white locally. Was hoping to take advantage of the end of the year to get a good deal. Messaged a dealer who purported to have new Lunar rock TRD on the lot, but guess what? Sold, months ago I'd wager, and yet the ad is still there.

When I was shopping this past fall the vast majority of newer used options were rentals, even one that didn’t have it on the Autocheck but came with an Avis sticker on the tow wiring bag.

I went around to area dealers and it seemed like there was no shot at getting a new base/SR5 4WD for under $50k OTD even waiting so I paid to get a 2.5 yr old, 24k mile one shipped from a state away at CarMax for ~$40k OTD. Their site was the only one that let me exclude certain criteria too.

Not a deal I’d be inclined to brag about but after all my looking around, it felt fair. If I could’ve gotten a deal in the upper-40’s I probably would have just waited for that but not at 50+.

Welcome. I third this opinion. You can easily get a non-Pro 4Runner at invoice if you look around. True invoice to MSRP difference is about $3000-$5000 on the 4Runner depending on trim and options.

I hear you on the White TRD's. I wanted Black or Grey, but those sell quick. White seems to stick around.

Are you willing to drive alittle? I know youre on the lower west side, but here in my SE corner of the state, there is plenty of TRD inventory that arent white. Some dealers may be willing to deliver. Just my $.02.

I just picked up a CPO 2020 SR5P w/3rd row and 40k miles for $37k. It was one of the dealerships owners wife's grocery getter and looks brand new.

I tried CarMax and paid to transfer what looked like a great deal on a '22, but it was rock chip blasted to shit. They ended up refunding my transfer fee bc it was not what the ad described.

Are you willing to buy out of state and get it shipped?

just bought a new ORP with $4500 discount from msrp.

i highly recommend a 4R with KDSS. Will make mountain driving much more enjoyable.
