no mods yet, working on the wheels and tires now.
I owned a 2005 black Toyota 4-Runner limited, that my now 20 yr old drives. I then got a newer Jeep wrangler and made many modifications to it. It was not ideal for travel soccer taking my boys to games out of town. I have made the switch back to the 4-runner. Over a year ago I purchased a 2020 4-runner SR5 Premium with 32K mi on it. I'm happy with it, but would like to do a few modifications. I need help choosing the tires. It still has stock tires, w no lift. I would like the tires to stick slightly out w/o rubbing. I'm looking for more of a rugged look, changing my wheels as well. Anyone have a picture or advice of theirs with no lift, but maybe with a 0 offset??

    Welcome to the forum!

As far as wheels It kind of depends on what tires you want to run. My current setup is RRW 17x8.5 -12 with 285/70/17 Nitto Ridge Grapplers. This setup is just about flush. Maybe a 1/4" of poke.
Another common size is 17x9 0 offset. This is almost flush as well.

If you want poke, you'll have to start looking at more negative offset options. This will also increase your scrub radius and involve more trimming to avoid rubbing. It will also throw more junk onto the side of your car and damage your paint over time.

Edit: The Ridge Grapplers have held up great but they are a heavy tire. If tire weight and mpg is a concern a toyo at3 is a great tire. I'd recommend the C load range unless you're gonna be doing some wheeling over sharp rocks.

Heres a screen grab of someone else's setup.
17x8.5 -12 RR7-H with 285/70/17 Mickey Thompson Baja Boss (Very heavy tire)

Pretty flush. A tiny bit of poke with this tire choice. This is optimal IMO.
Note the removal of the front mudflaps. A body mount chop and fender liner mod may be necessary as well. Small price to pay for getting some more meat under the rig.

My advice is a little more conservative, get 4 of the black TRD Pro wheels, the parts guy at the local dealership sez he could do all 4 for $1,000.00. Throw them in the back and head to Discount Tire. Have them swap the wheel tire pressure sensors over to the Pro wheels, then mount and balance the Toyo Open Country A/T’s in stock size 265/70R-17. Sell the SR5 rims on Facebook marketplace, Craigslist or whatever for a quick sale, in order to augment the cost of your new tires/rims. Get black lug nuts too for the icing on the cake. JMHO. Do you have a lift on yours with your current set up?

This orange 4-runner appears to have a lift, so that set up they have may not work? I had Toyo's on my Jeep wrangler, loved the look, but honestly I loved the sound of my old BFG's lol. Mudflaps you are correct would be easy fix.

I do have a 2" lift in the back and a 2.5-3" lift in the front. However, a lift by itself will not help you clear larger tires. See tinkerers adventure for some good info on this.

I’m thinking of going 17x9 0 offset. Stock height don’t plan on lifting or cutting any plastic. Would running 275/70 rub in anyway? In your opinion…

If you’re gonna go with 275/70/17 I wouldn’t go so wide with your wheel. It’s outside the factory recommended wheel width for that tire size and would result in a “stretched” look.

Here’s a good guide on tire fitment.

Welcome from the center of the bourbon universe.

I would also take a look at the Pirelli Scorpion tire. I've been very happy with mine.

Comment that you replied to has been the same setup I’ve wanted since buying my 4R a few months back. Would you recommend a 17x8.5 then over the 17x9?

For 275's? I would personally. But it depends on the tire manufacturer and use case. Some tire manufacturers have different "approved rim width" specs.

    BFG K02's
    upload_2024-8-30_14-29-46.png

    vs.

    Falken A/T4W's
    upload_2024-8-30_14-30-21.png

On the street a 275/70/17 will likely be fine on a 9" wide wheel. But the ideal dimension is 17x8 according to most tire manufacturers.

Old school jeep guys will run skinnier wheels with wide tires in an effort to minimize the chance of the tire coming off the bead after airing down.
If that's not a consideration to you then it's likely fine. Again, it just depends on your use case.
