Hi all, I am curious if a 3/4 rack on the 5th gen 4Runner will provide mounting for a decent amount of roof top tents or do most all tents require the space of full rack. I’ve researched some of the tents but it’s not totally clear to me what some of the requirements mean.

Also, is anyone aware of any full length racks that have sunroof cutout other than GOBI and Baja?

    thanks
    mike

3/4 rack will work just fine with a RTT.
I’ve seen several people run the frontrunner 3/4 rack with RTT’s. Most roof racks will have an option for a sunroof cutout as well.

Depends on how large of a RTT you are getting or have. If you get a king-size or plus you may want to get the full-size rack anything smaller a 3/4 rack will work fine. I would say full size though as you can have some additional storage plus the tent if needed.

Thanks for the info guys. One more quick question...I hear that flat racks are better than basket type racks for Roof top tents. This makes sense given they are flat, although I thought you used crossbars to mount the tent anyway so why does it matter?

When you say 'basket type' are you referring to a rack like the Gobi? I don't know that a flat rack is any better per se, just more flexibility when it comes to mounting things on it. That's just my perception having not owned a rack like the Gobi.

I suppose I would consider Gobi a basket rack, although some have even taller sides. For a better example, Baja offers two different styles the utility flat and the basket.
