Hey all, looking for some words of wisdom to get my engine started.

I replaced the starter in my 2001 4runner yesterday. As part of the process, I removed the air intake on the passenger side of the engine for better access to the nut that holds on the tube for the transmission dipstick. Once I got the starter replaced, I cranked the engine to make sure everything worked. The engine started just fine, but ran very roughly without the air intake properly installed.

I replaced the air intake, started the engine, and all was well. Then I realized I had forgotten to install the little bold that holds the transmission dipstick tube. I removed the airbox again, installed the bolt, and for good measure, tightened the valve cover bolts that I could get to, hoping that it might reduce the valve cover leakage I'm experiencing. I also used a paper towel to give a quick wipe inside the throat of the throttle body. Then I re-installed the air intake. Alas, now the engine cranks over with great vigor and enthusiasm, but does not start.

I removed the air intake again, thinking I must have jiggled a wire or something. I can't see anything amiss. I am reasonably good at swapping parts when I know what's wrong, but I am not particularly gifted at the art of diagnosis. Any suggestions as to what I might have done, and what I can do to fix it? Hoping to avoid having it towed to a mechanic. Thanks in advance for your help!

I think the rpm gauge will move while cranking? If it moves then you have a crank sensor signal.

Otherwise maybe you'll need to test the fuel pressure for a bad fuel pump.

I'm guessing fuel pump as you said it ran rough...which I don't really think it would do even with the air intake off.

Cycle the key on and then off and then on and then off and then on and then try starting. Sometimes a bad fuel pump will work again.

    Also:
Check the EFI relay. Check the Circuit Opening Relay too.

Doesn't hurt to look for Vacuum hoses that have come loose or broken.

The rpm needle does not budge when cranking. I never noticed whether it moved previously or not. Does the starter spin the engine fast enough to make the needle move?

I tried the on/off thing with the key. No luck.

I saw it mentioned elsewhere but have never noticed either. I mean to check when I go out to my car after work and start it, ha ha.

I would crack the fuel line at the fuel filter and turn the key on and see if the pump shoots fuel into a bucket. Then you can discount the pump at least.

I tested the EFI relay by swapping it with the turn signal relay. Both of them were good.

Does the OBD show any codes?

Agree with Adhofu on checking for codes.

When you removed the air intake the second time and wiped the throttle body, any chance you molested the MAF sensor? I don't remember if that's in a spot where it could be reached accidentally.

I would remove both terminals on the battery for 15 minutes and try again. If not I concur with the MAF sensor or some other sensor. Get a diagnostic tool (harbor freight). Check for codes. Otherwise you are shooting in the dark.
