Hey guys excuse ignorance I just bought a 1999 2.7l and I’m having problems with Egr valve getting codes for it. One mechanic told me Egr valve replacement won’t fix it and another told me to do a delete. I was looking up and reading all these websites to see what to replace the valve or the solenoid, coming up empty and not sure what to do. Been losing power on highway thought this is the cause not sure. Help!

    What codes are you getting?

Does the problem only happen at higher speeds?

Does the problem happen only after the engine has warmed up?

Does the problem go away if you slow down, or after it cools off?

    Out of my FSM:

    P0136-
Detection Item: Heated oxygen sensor circuit malfunction (bank 1 sensor 2)
    Trouble Area: Heated oxygen sensor

    P0401
Detection Item: Exhaust Gas Recirculation Flow Insufficient Detected
Trouble Area: 1. EGR valve stuck closed 2. Short in VSV circuit for EGR 3. Open in EGR gas temp sensor circuit 4. EGR hose disconnected 5. ECM

    P0402
Detection Item: Exhaust Gas Recirculation Flow Excessive Detected
Trouble Area: 1. EGR valve stuck open 2. EGR VSV open malfunction 3. Open in VSV circuit for EGR 4. Short in EGR gas temp sensor circuit 5. ECM

The trouble shooting for the P0401 and P0402 is a lot of checking resistance and what the temperature the sensors think it is. This might seem like an odd suggestion, but try asking this on the forum (the other large 4runner forum). That forum might not allow you to post a new thread on a brand new account, but you can comment on an older thread and people will see it. I recommend this because the 3RZ is an uncommon engine to find on 4runners, and the problem that your getting is also uncommon, and that forum has more active 3rd gen owners.

My guess is your valve is probably fine, I cant see a physical orientation where the valve is letting in too much and too little recirculation flow at the same time. The diagnostic manual lists the EGR being stuck open in one of the trouble codes and stuck closed in the other. So that's probably why your mechanic said a new valve wont fix it.

Deleting it is a popular option, but it wont pass smog if you ever register it in a state with checks. I wouldn't do it, and besides the P0136 means there is a chance that the problem has nothing to do with the EGR system. I'd highly suggest finding a factory service manual for a 1996-2000 4runner, specifically volume 1. It has extensive troubleshooting for that problem that is too long for me to type up.

Thank you so much! All that is really helpful, just joined the other site trying to reply I can’t yet or make a new thread. Also on some Facebook groups. Do you know the best route to get a FSM, other than spending 200$ of course. Thanks !

I can't find anywhere that lets you rent them. You might have better luck looking for a first gen Tacoma service manual. The 3rz was used for longer on the Tacoma, and I'd wager the error codes between them are the same.

Buying the manual used isn't typically much cheaper than buying it as a set new, but the part that I was quoting was out of the first volume of the service manual. So you might be able to get away with purchasing volume one (there are 3), but it will still cost 80$.

I have an account on the other forum so I could copy paste it on your behalf. Just tell me your username so I can tag you.

So I finally caved and brought it to a mechanic. Turns out Egr was already replaced. And my code had nothing to do with lack of power etc. it was the front brakes locking up. Had to have master cylinders replaced. So bizarre. I was way off base lol. Thought I should update this. Thanks again for your help.
