Replace 20” alloy rims with… TRD Pro rims and rugged tires?

Just drove a 2022 TRD Sport in Army Green off the lot at a Toyota dealership. My first 4Runner! I want to replace the rims and tires with TRD Pro rims or something like it the dealership can sell me and install, along with some tires like HO2 or other versatile tires for both urban/suburban snow/ice and off-road use. Any advice? Also will need to sell the 20” alloy rims and tires. They’ve got 11,000 miles on them. Is eBay the best place to sell them? Any thoughts on value?
    Thanks for any advice!

Nice looking vehicle. I have a Limited and had the same want. I went with the ORP wheels because I thought they went best for an oem look with the chrome accents of the limited. Went with Falken Wildpeak in oem 265/70/17. Being you have the sport model and no chrome I think the black TRD wheels would look awesome on your setup. I bought my 17” from a gal on Facebook marketplace but also came across quite a few on Craigslist. Those might be an additional option for selling your 20” ers

Congrats on the new 4Runner. Love that color too. I bought my Limited in 2020 and had the same issue. The 20" rims are kinda dumb -- super heavy, less sidewall to absorb impacts, a bit too chrome-y, plus there's waay less choice of tires in that size.

I'm wary of the quality of inexpensive aftermarket rims so went with the TRDs. I got the set for only $700 online from a Toyota dealer. So that was an easy call -- Toyota branded, look great, you know they will fit and are designed for the 4Runner, etc.

For tires I also wanted something that was versatile and usable year round but would be good in the snow -- not an easy combo to find.

I first tried the all-season Michelin Agilis Cross Climate, which have great reviews and the Three Peak severe snow rating. I loved them for the few hundred miles I had them -- except I could not get them to balance well. They are quite heavy (being designed for big trucks and vans with heavy loads) and that may have been the main issue.

I'm now running Pirelli Scorpion AT Plus, which is an all season all-terrain tire that also has the Three Peak snow rating. They have the added benefit of a rugged look. They ride fine and are not at all noisy, so I think Pirelli did a nice job of making an AT that is easy to live with in urban and suburban conditions, while providing some extra toughness and off-road ability. You can see this wheelset in the pics below. One of the pics is during a wheel swap, so you can the TRD/Pirelli on the front and one of the stock 20" wheels still on the back.

If I could do it all over again I would at least consider the Michelin Defenders. People absolutely rave about them in all conditions, with a lot of people feeling they are better in the snow than a lot of tires that have the official snow rating. I've driven them on a family member's car and agree they are outstanding. They also last a long time. And being lighter than an AT, they should get a tad better gas mileage. The only downside I see with them is they look pretty plain, like any old highway tire.

Best of luck with your choice and let us know how it goes. Oh, one other tip: The 4Runner is notoriously sensitive to wheel balance. If it's not perfect you can get vibrations in the body and a shimmy in the steering wheel at highway speeds. Some of us have been cursed to have that shimmy pop up from time to time, quite unpredictably. And this is a risk of going to 17" wheels. In 16K miles I never once had the issue with the stock 20" wheels et. But I did/do have it on the 17s. The weights obviously have to be closer to the hub than on a 20" wheel, so they are inherently harder to balance. Some of us have gone through a few balances to get it decent. Most recommend doing a Road Force balance, which applies weights based on how the tire spins under load at high speeds.

One other thought: if you can afford to, and have the space, you might want to just keep the original wheelset. That's what I've done. I store them in my garage. That way you have emergency replacements, and also the option of having two very different kinds of tires on hand depending on your needs. For example, if I move farther north I'd put dedicated snow tires on my 20s so I can run them in the winter.

Again, pls let us know what you do -- and post pics!

Replacing 20in wheels and tires to 17in wheels and tires a really good decision imo.

TRD Pro wheels are the best factory looking wheels but there are few things I don't like about them. They are only 7in wide so the biggest tire you can mount with in the specs of tire manufacturer is 275/70R17.
TRD Pro wheels also has more offset so it could have rubbing issues. I think that's why TRD Pro comes with some bumper trimming even with 265/70R17. (Not sure if the trimming is true or not)

My favorite factory wheel is TRD Offroad wheel. It is a 7.5in wider wheel which meets the minimum width to run 285/70R17 or even 34in 285/75R17 tires. TRD Offroad wheels even have better offset that minimize chance of rubbing. That's why I use them on my Limited with 285s.

As for tire choices, I live in Colorado so 3 peak mountain snow flake tire for winter is a must for me. Since we have lot of forest roads/ gravel road and trails I got all terrain tires. So 3PMSF rated A/T tires was perfect match for me.

Guys, this is all hugely helpful. The photos are very very useful for getting a sense of swapping out my wheels. I misspoke above — I meant the Goodrich KO2 tires were recommended to me by a neighbor who does serious off-road in Colorado but lives here in the ‘burbs of DC. I don’t know squat about the difference with any AT tire between 265, 275, 285. But seems like going with OEM TRD Pro or TRD OR rims is best move. Eventually I’ll get skid plates and also want a grill guard (have been eyeing stuff made by C4 Fabrications). Anyone use the KO2 tires?

Is there any after market wheel that you would consider? I normally wouldn't want an after market, but seeing your reasoning on the 7.5 inch width makes me want to copy you, but I really like the look of the trd pro gun metal wheel. I have a 2022 limited in nautical blue and really just want more side wall for a softer ride. What would you recommend?

Sorry, no idea about aftermarket wheels :(

Lot of our forum members have aftermarket wheels. So maybe someone will comment on good wheels.

You can safely and easily run wider tires on 7" wheels. Lots of guys run 285/70 17 on the TRD Pro wheels. Plus it sounds like OP is going to stay with stock (17") sizes so it's a non issue for him anyway. Offset of the Pro wheels is a negligible difference, I think they sit 4mm further out, so no model should require any bumper trimming.

Huge fan of the KO2’s. This is stock 265’s. I was going to go 275 but they only came in the heavier e rated tire. I didn’t want the weight

I ran BFG KO2 LT275/70R17 Load E. Lesson learned, I would never run Load E tires again unless I would hit trails that has very sharp rocks. BFG KO2 LT285/70R17 Load C is my favorite tire till date. This is compared to my experience with Falken Wildpeak AT3W, Nitto Terra Grappler (stock from TRD Pro), Goodyear wrangler duratrac.

Right now I'm running Toyo Open Country AT3. Haven't had to test them properly in a good trail. So I won't say anything yet.

I wouldn't recommend the TRD Pro rims because they are skinny.

I went with FN’s they are the maker of the TRD wheels. I could be wrong. The benefit is they are 8”. Hope this helps!

New rims and KO2 265/70/17 tires installed today. I did feel rubbing on the front driver’s side when I turned my steering wheel all the way to the right while I was backing into a parking spot. I’ll be driving it more tomorrow and will see what happens.

My steering wheel is wobbling with the new K02 tires and pro rims. Is that normal? Doesn’t seem normal.

All I know is KO2 on SR5 wheels and TRD Offroad wheels its not normal with my personal experience with multiple KO2 sets with multiple sizes (265, 275, 285).

I had vibration on my stock TRD Pro, so not sure if TRD Pro wheels are more sensitive to balancing. May be ask the tire shop for a Road force balance. I know Discount tire shops have Road force balance machines.

Thanks much. Getting these rims and tires installed turned into a long annoying process. Took five times as long as it did to buy the vehicle from them.

Based on your feedback, I drove straight to the dealership and one of the more experienced people acknowledged the tires were not balanced correctly yesterday. Said it was not a rim issue even though I went down from 20 inch to 17 inches.

I don't deal with Toyota dealerships much as they lack in knowledge. That's why I pay my own money to good shops even when my 4Runners are new and under warranty. Eg - I paid my own money for my new 4R TRD Pro balancing issues and alignment issues. Life's good now.
