Well, it's unfortunate to discover that my 2023 ORP must not have remote start; it doesn't show up in the Toyota app and the key fob trick doesn't work. I really can't understand why they don't have it on every new 4Runner, yet will try to find a solution.

With that said, has anyone had any experience with these things? I've seen people discuss the OEM version, as well as ones like Start-X; however, I just don't want to jeopardize the functionality of my electronic system, etc.

I put the Accessorides remote start on mine and I'm super-happy with it.

I'm considering getting a remote start myself so I've been reading a little bit about them. There are a handful of simple ones that work with the OEM key fob but then you are limited by the range of the OEM key fob which apparently isn't very much. So you have a couple options. A couple companies (12volt solutions, Acessorides, I'm sure there are more) have an option where you can use a smartphone app to start your car remotely. If you do this you'll have to pay a monthly or annual fee for the app. The other option is to get a new key fob with more range. A lot of the same companies that offer a phone app also offer this but if you are willing to go the new key fob route there are a couple brands to look at like Compustar. As far as new key fobs/remotes go, the Compustar remotes look a lot nicer than what I've seen offered from most other companies. And Compustar is well-established which may be worth considering--one of my concerns with the smaller companies that offer phone apps is if they're gonna be around and still providing support for that app in 5-10 years.

If the range of the OEM key fob isn't a problem for you then the 12volt solutions and Accessorides kits are not too expensive and get good reviews.

My 12 volt works fine. Keep in mind any keyless start equipped Runner will shut the engine off when you open the door.

I wouldn’t say the sales person lied, more like they don’t know and Toyota is weird with their options so you have to do your own research. However it is known that only the Pro Bro and Limited come with it in the US. Canadian models are a whole different mess.

I guess I could try either the 12volt or Accessorides kit; looks like Compustar might require a tech to do it. Do either option make you splice wires? That Start-X kit has no wire splicing and is a bit cheaper; but, cheaper isn’t always better.

12 volt is plug and play. It took me longer to find a place for the control box and where to route the wiring than actual setup.

I had the Viper DS4 put in on my SR5 and I love it. Used a T harness and use the stock fob with 3x unlock to start. The range isn't great but I usually just start it on cold mornings from inside the house to warm it up before leaving. I have the viper app that can also start it but if you want range then I think you can always add the aftermarket Viper remote

I guess I’m just cheap. Or lazy. I bought this and just walk out to my truck, start it up, turn on the heater or AC, and go back inside for 10 minutes.

    https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B079JCFDYB?ie=UTF8&th=1

It’s super easy and I use it in almost every public parking lot. Comes with three keys.

Edit to say I don’t leave anything of any real value inside. And by value, I mean something a drug addict can sell at the pawn shop.

My only experience with remote start was on my son's Corolla a couple years ago. It was aftermarket, and when it failed, it took the battery, alternator, and starter with it. Lots of dollars spent and time wasted. So no remote start for me, thanks. I'll start it myself.

That's a one out of million. But yeah, i'm all for less is more. But it's really a nice feeling knowing your vehicle has a full active alarm that can notify you anywhere and start your car. I have had one in every car since the 90's with out issue.

And I think you can get one that doesn't shut down as soon as younopen a door, which is way better!
