I own a 2013 Limited 4 Runner that has given me little to talk about issues since I bought it December 2012. I currently have 247,000 miles on the 5th generation. My compliments and total frustrations are:
Initially had first axle bearing replaced 15,000 miles ago and since have had 3 subsequent axle bearings replaced on the left side, all OEM, due to continuous bearing failure. Mechanic can’t seem to find the reason for continued, recurring failure. No history of front end accidents, no CV boot leakage, new Yokohama Geolander tires 10k mikes ago. Any ideas for the continuing axle bearing failure??

    Try a different mechanic. :notsure:

Seems like it could be installer error.

I’m getting a second opinion by a Toyota certified mechanic today, thank you.

Of course, there's the possibility that there's another issue that caused the first failure and subsequent failures. Hopefully it's something simple.

I'm sorry I don't have an answer for your bearing issue, but I was curious about your maintenance schedule.......having almost 250k miles on your 5th gen.

Are you a 5k mile oil changer? 0w20 or something else?

How often have you changed the transmission, differential, and transfer case oils?

    Thank you.

Is your mechanic just replacing the bearing and not all of the related seals that prevent water and dirt from causing a bearing to fail?

The next mechanic needs to know he’s not replacing a bearing, but needs to find why it’s eating them up. You’d think the second failure would have been a clue to start looking around. Maybe the spindle where the bearing goes got damaged? Or something else is out of tolerance that ends up loading that bearing incorrectly. Good luck finding the cause so you can get back to enjoying your 4runner.

just a bearing, on shop press? or whole new unit? sometimes slight misalignment during pressing bearing may fail it. better replace whole hub with bearing assembly, than just bearing, to minimize error. bolts torque also plays role.
