Rear Dif breather

    Hello,

    I recently did some off-roading that included passing through 2–3 feet of water. After doing it I remembered that water could get into the rear dif through the breather and I swapped the fluid. My question is about the breather “tube”. Do I need to do any maintenance on that and if so, where exactly is it located? Thank you

    Another option is to extend the breather to a higher location. ARB makes a kit to locate the breather in the engine bay. I opted for a DIY to the area behind the driver's side tail light from a writeup I found online.

    ARB kit is very good and easy to install. I have one and I'm in Florida and go in a lot of moderately deep muddy water. I haven't had any trouble with water going into my differential since the install.

    Did you see any sign of water in the diff oil when you drained it?
    I tend to wonder if extending the vent is really a "need" versus being one of those "unlikely but it's cheap so do it just in case".

    I saw a pale, milky appearance (indicating water intrusion) of my diff oil when i changed it before I installed the breather line.

    The issue I’ve had was the temperature drops from the water and shuts the factory breather. Negative pressure sucks water through the axle seal and now there’s water in the diff. With the ARB or such, it doesn’t close up the breather and the pressure is equalized.

    Does anyone know why the elocker has a breather which is separate from the diff breather? Internally are those two regions separate from each other? I did the DIY breather mode by combining the two vents and running a line near the fuel filler cap but now I am paranoid about the oil fumes in the elocker chamber.
