Rear Bumper Hitch Cover

Just bought a new 2023 4Runner Limited and was wondering if there’s an aftermarket cover that fills in the area where the hitch receiver is. I have one on my Tahoe and I just remove it when I need to use the hitch and then cover it when not in use.

edit: I used a rubber Toyota one on my FJ Cruiser but eventually lost it or someone decided to take it.

This looks useful especially in bad weather and poor/no lighting. Do you use a locking trailer pin with it? I didn’t watch the video but they state it’s a fairly simple modification.

 

Yep, I too just installed the C1R Diode Dynamics hitch pod, extremely bright reverse light, flashes 5 times quickly when depressing the brake pedal, along with running lights. Also used a black locking hitch pin from Walmart for security purposes.

Yes, I use a Factor55 that I PlastiDip'd black. The DD model I bought is the C1R with brake light. I don't use the flash feature though. One day I'll get a new phone to take pictures again.

One of the things that I became aware of that, at least in california, it was a limit to the number of flashes allowed. It's been awhile since I researched it, maybe 3 years and I believe it's four flashes.

Of course, I break the law constantly when I use aftermarket LEDs for headlights. The thing I've taught my kids the last 20 years was don't do things that encourage people with guns to come "meet" you.

 

In central NY that lock will become permanent after one winter, then you'll have to break it off with a pipe slipped over the lock, just like any thief would...

I secured mine with a 5/8" diameter Allen bolt and nylon locknut torqued down with a Milwaukee M18.

 

Do you have a pic of it installed? Does it fit flush in the hitch or does it stick out?

I'll be stamping it onto some metallic paint in two days... It is a not a flat surface, so I will have to roll it on the pad to get the transfer the paint.

I like that. Color keying is a big plus in my aesthetic tastes.

This is nice but $160 with the brake light. Didn't someone post that is sticks out of our hitch and does look as flush as on the pictures?

 

Does anybody make just a plain old spike trailer hitch cover?

I figure it this way, if somebody rear ends you the spike will break up the point of impact minimizing damage for my beautiful vehicle. Maybe a small explosive charge at the end to help disperse that energy even more.

Seriously, I have looked at those cheap Chinese ones that do everything like turn signal, reverse, driving and brake lights. I just figure they're not going to last very long and end up not ordering.

 

I have this on my hitch. It is easy to remove (no wires), multi use, and I use it as a step.

 

It also comes in black. Red is more visible.

But I don't think they make one for Toyota. I have only seen them on Tahoe's and Yukon's, escalade etc.

 

The 4Runner's hitch protrudes too far for that work. There is a plastic blanking plate available if you unbolted the hitch from the crossmember, ref PartsLink TO1137102.

 

I agree, to get one to cover the receiver, it would have to stick out far and look strange.

 

I think it would be called a codpiece.

A little rushed and sloppy, but being imperfect might keep someone from borrowing it for their own hitch.

The silver was topped with a clear coat, it matches well with the bumper.
