Rear 120v Always On?

    On while in park but I want it on all the time. Anyone have a how-to that makes it possible??

    Just my opinion but not a good idea on how fast that sucker can drain your battery.

    You said in Park, so I assume that you mean engine running. If so, it doesn’t have to be in Park, you can be driving. Otherwise, what Dillusion said.

    Can you explain your specific use? By "always on", do you still want to be able to switch it off when not using it? Do you want it to be able to use it with the engine off?

    I want 400w when not in Park… OEM is 400w in Park, 100w when not in park (any other gear selection, including Neutral).

    I don't think it's a good idea / worth to change wiring for that. Not sure if it's engaging alternator or something when using 400w in N or P.

    I would buy a battery pack for that kind of use and let it charge by the 12v outlet. So you don't risk draining the regular 12v battery.

    I would be interested to know the reason. Toyota doesn’t seem to be the only one to do this. I’m sure there’s a good reason for it. I agree that it’s likely not worth the trouble to attempt to bypass it.

    There are kits that allow you to do this on Tacoma pickups. I had one in my 2019 Tacoma. There is no reason it couldn't be done on a 4Runner.

    Read through this thread for an inverter mod idea.
    But you better get the wiring diagram for your particular model year to make sure you know what you’re doing and verify the circuitry. The electrical systems have changed between MY 2019 and 2020+.

    Lots of goodies
    The safest way is to put dual batteries in the vehicle with a separator between them. Then you can safely run whatever you want off the auxiliary battery without worry.

    This is what I did in my Tacoma and will soon do in my T4R. It allowed me to plug my lithium battery pack into the 110V outlet and run it at 400W. My refrigerator was plugged into the 12V outlet on the battery pack. While driving, the car charged the battery faster than the refrigerator drained it. So, when stopped the battery took over and could run the refrigerator for a day or two. This was simpler and more portable than a dual battery system. It also allowed me to move the battery and refrigerator to my trailer or to a picnic table or the garage or wherever.

    So electrically what did you do? Mod the OEM inverter to output up to 400W?
    Or add an additional 400 W inverter?

    BTW, I operate my lithium battery and fridge like you do. But my battery pulls less than 100W when recharging and pass-thru powering the fridge. I don’t really need to mod the inverter for how I use it.

    I modified the existing inverter to override the 400W lockout when moving.

    Hey Dale... Not sure if this was what you were thinking about. This is a post right here on our own forums about getting "always hot" outlets in our vehicles. It apparently will allow for usable 120v outlets even with the engine off. Of course, you'd just have to be mindful of leaving anything plugged in for extended periods of time (days/weeks). See what you think.
