    Just got a 2014 4RUNNER Limited.
Low miles, well maintained but I need to learn about these electric running boards? Not working on driver's door. I hear they go out a lot and are expensive. What is the least expensive work around for a short person??

A milk crate on a rope would probably be the least expensive workaround. Otherwise, get a set of fixed running boards that most 4Runners are equipped with.

There are many people that take off running boards to improve offload clearance, it will be cheaper to look for used OEM takeoffs instead of aftermarket.

    None yet.
@OldLady it would help if you gave your location as well, I actually have a set of oem takeoff running boards from my 2014 limited currently listed in the sale section but don’t know how far away you might be?

Be aware that the Limited model does not use the same running bords as all the other models, due to the Limited rocker panels being lower, and use the same mounting points as non-Limited running boards.

There is a board controller under the dash that most people just replace.
The motors going out seem to be extremely rare
You might simply have a rock caught up or mud caked up around the arms, any sort of load on the motor, and the controller board wont allow the motor to move.
I would suggest first going to a car wash or if you have access to a good water hose or pressure washer, wash under the kick panel between the two wheels. Make sure you get under and behind the running board to blow out any sand / rocks / mud. Afterwards you can open the door and see if the board deploys. If you can hear the motor trying to move but the board doesnt come out, the arms might have sand / grit / rust on the pins of the mechanical folding arm. If you can hear the motor that means the whole system is physically working but the arm has a restriction. If there is any sort of restriction or load the arm wont deploy, this load sensing motor and controller in the dash do this to keep from burning the motor up trying to deploy a board that is stuck or jammed up.
If you can hear the board try to retract, its time to pull the board down and disassemble the mechanical arms and polish the pins and grease everything.
If you can not hear the board try to retract, the motor is not operational at all, you might have to replace the controller under the dash.
