I've had my 4Runner (it's a 2001 I think??) for a few years now and it's done this the whole time I've had it. Any time I play music, whether it's on a radio station or playing a CD, there's a constant ticking noise coming from the speakers. The noise gets faster with the speed, too. It doesn't happen unless the car is in drive. I have no experience with cars so I don't know where to even start in fixing the problem.

None. Bone Stock. EXCEPT: Brushguard, tow hitch, both welded to the frame. It's good to have friends and a fully equipped garage!
You need a noise filter in the radio's main power lead. Commercially available everywhere.
Also, the speaker leads, the actual wire TO the speakers, need to be re-routed. One of them is too close to something feeding noise, electrical noise, that is, into the speaker system. Moving the speaker wires will take care of that. Worst case, a little aluminum foil around the speaker wires, where the speaker wires run near other wires will do the trick.

Good luck, and let us know how things work out for you!

Is this a stock radio system? Stock Speakers? If it is stock, this shouldn't happen. I would be hunting for a bad ground, pinched wire in the radio harness.

If it's not stock, then good luck, follow the advice above plus consider that the head unit or speakers may be junk.

Aftermarket equipment is always garbage and the installation is always worse. If I had a dollar for every piece of aftermarket crap I've yanked out of a car where afterwards everything is fixed, I'd be rich.

As far as I know it’s stock, so maybe I’ll search for a pinched wire like you said
