    Greetings 4R.com...

First time poster here. I'm beginning my search for a '23 4R and I have a question about how far owner's in the rust belt have taken steps to protect their undercarriages. I've already studied up on Fluid Film, Woolwax, and Surface shield including threads on the forum, but I couldn't find any mention if anyone took the extra-long step of applying a product similar to POR-15 to the entire frame before applying the lanolin coating.

I live in the northern Chicago suburbs. I've always shied away from body-on-frame vehicles simply because of the eventual undercarriage rot and I'm embarrassed to say I only recently learned how owners use products such as Fluid Film to protect their vehicles. Thoughts and comments would be greatly appreciated.

frame rust from inside more than from outside. fluid film seeps into smallest crevices inside frame and stays there preventing water intrusion. outside frame woolwax holds better from water and send abrasion. por15 for already rusted surface, converting rust. nobody apply woolwax over por15. new 4runner: fluid film inside frame, woolwax outside.

Did a ton of research on this, owned two tacomas that were recalled due to frame rust And wanted to make sure I did it right with our new baby.

Highly recommend Cosmoline RP-342 (CRS Heavy duty corrosion inhibitor - same stuff). You can buy a gallon for about $100 and apply using any pneumatic spray gun. You can also buy individual spray cans, however it’s more expensive and you do not get the benefit of the long spray hoses that come with the spray guns to get inside the frame. The stuff will last much longer than Lanolin based products like wool wax or fluid film, it won’t chip like paint, and will not trap water underneath like rubberized coatings. You will get many years out of a single application and will not have to deal with the hassle of annual applications.

One product that doesn't get mentioned is CorrosionX, Corrosion X XD (newer product), and Corrosion X HD.

I've been using Corrosion X on my Lexus GX since 2018 and our new 2022 4Runner.

I spray the inside of the frame and inside door panels with the Corrosion X (red can) and the outer frame/rest of under carriage with the new XD product. I did use the HD version for 3 seasons, but it's very THICK and excels in high spray/splash areas. The newer XD version is a mix between the regular and HD version. It creeps and provides a great barrier.

Each of us has their preferences, but wanted express my highest praises for the newer XD.

And NO, I don't work for them or affiliated with them.....
