Hey there! First-time poster, though I've been following the forum for years and always valued the advice shared.

I have a 2001 4Runner LTD with 352K miles, and it's running well with no engine issues. I've taken good care of it since I bought it in 2003, and I feel like I hit the vehicle lottery with this one! :)

I'm currently in a different part of the country than the mechanics who have worked on it in the past, and I'm looking for advice before scheduling with a new mechanic.

My last fuel system cleaning and spark plug replacement was 3 years/52K miles ago, and the timing belt was replaced 100K miles ago. I no longer drive it off-road, so it's had easy miles for the last 100K or so, if that matters at all.

My question: I'm about to take a 3K mile road trip—should I get these services done before I go?

My Google searches have provided such a wide range of answers, I thought I'd come here to see what experience says!

    Thanks, in advance —
    Finn

You don't need fuel system cleanings. Gasoline already has detergents. It won't hurt however.

Mitsuboshi (TOYOTA supplier) timing belts can go 150k miles easy. I change mine at 125k and have never seen a single crack. If you don't know what brand was used 100k miles ago, then you are due. Probably a good idea to do it.

My plugs\wires go for 100k+ miles before I change them. The original pair went like 150k miles until I got a misfire. Second pair I just changed at 280k miles.

I would get yourself a code reader that will read live data. They are like $50 now? See what your fuel trims are. If they are within 5% then you're running really good. I have NEVER had my MAF cleaned and I checked my fuel trims last week and they were at 1% for short term and long term.

Regardless, probably good to do the T-Belt and have the mechanic see if they see anything else to do. I assume the water pump and pulleys and tensioner were all replaced with the last T-Belt? If not, they are way over due.
