Prevent 4runner theft

Hello I would like to know what is the best theft deterrent for a 2019 4runner?.. Please let me know also are kill switchs safe to install , and if so how to install it step by step ...thanx

 

Steering wheel club.

 

Club won't do crap if they really want it. Couple chops to the steering wheel and its gone.

It won't deter the smash and grab losers either.

I still think tint and a sun shade works damn good if they can't see whats inside.

 

Park it in a garage every chance you get and set the alarm.

If a thief wants it, they'll take it from ya'. We can only do so much to deter them.

 

the immobilizer in your 4R is good on its own in most situations. defeating it is possible but would take more time and effort a typical car thief would want to take.

steering wheel locks are not good and are very easily and quickly defeated.

 

Cover up your VIN on the dash so thieves with an inside man at a dealer can't program fobs with it.

Put your smart key in a radio signal blocking box when not in use, to prevent relay attacks.

Park your vehicle somewhere that a tow truck can't pick it up.

correct me if i’m wrong but physical access to the OBD port is required to program an immobilizer and/or smart key.

 

How many times have you watched 'Gone in 60 Seconds' to come up with this list?

 

^Ha! That silly movie? Nicolas Cage sticks a movie prop (which I guess is supposed to represent a Lishi tool for wafer locks) in the key slot and opens the car door. They didn't have smart key systems when the movie was made.

 

While you're at it, you might as well put the 4Runner on jack stands every time you park it and remove all four wheels. Oh, and incase the thieves have 4 spare tires, remove the steering wheel too.

We all have a higher risk of being in an accident vs getting our truck stolen. But that's what insurance is for.

Carry lots of insurance and keep that insurance current. It's just a hunk of metal & glass. If someone steals it, so be it. Insurance can replace it and I can go on with my life (with just a little crying because I love my SloRunner).

 

^Not sure where you were going with this. Things like covering your VIN is easy to do and unobtrusive. Removing your tires and steering wheel every time is obviously impractical.

By your logic, do you keep your doors unlocked when parked outside overnight? Why not? Just let insurance handle it

 

Here in NorCal there's thieves running around with fob signal boosters so it can clone your signal from inside the house, work, gym etc. I've been using the same steering wheel lock on my last 3 trucks. Maybe just a visual deterrent. I don't think the 4 runner steering wheel locks does it?

 

I never park my truck outside overnight. I always park in my garage, and even though it's in the garage, I set the alarm. My point was, we can only do so much. If a thief wants my truck, they'll take it from me. Either with intelligence or by physical force (a club or kill switch won't help if someone sticks a gun in my face to steal my ride).

 

All of the above plus deactivating the proximity lock/unlock on the remote so it isnt always looking for a signal to allow touching the handle to unlock it.

Once you physically unlock with the remote fob it cancels this out and the procedure has to be performed again.

1. Hold down the lock button
2. Hit the unlock button twice

 

I leave the transfer case in neutral if I'm worried. Seeing as how the majority of this country can't drive stick, I figure an even greater number don't even know what a transfer case is. I could be wrong though.

 

You are actually doing the most effective thing for theft prevention - parking it a locked garage.

 

I'm so old school (and a bit paranoid) that I even lock the door going INTO my garage.

 

Move somewhere where theft, home invasion and violent crime isn't much of an issue. Seriously.

 

I was concerned about this too when I purchased my vehicle. There's only so much we can do to prevent theft. I used to own a 90s Honda. I had all the security stuff on it, removable steering wheel, clutch and steering wheel lock, etcs. Thieve were still able to steal it. I found out they used a hydraulic wheel tow to move my car. Anyway... I recommend not leaving valuable inside your car or have it visible. Don't park in sketchy places, disable your key fob, have full insurance coverage if you can afford it, and be aware of your surrounding.

 

I would say that is really not practical for many people. Active duty military for example. Caring for an elderly family member. Have a great job you really like. Etc etc

 

Don't use your remote to lock the truck if anyone is nearby, to prevent them capturing your alarm code. Check trailheads for broken window glass, and go hiking somewhere else if you find any. Agree on window tinting, plus park in such a way they can't determine if anyone is sitting in the driver seat.

 

One guy in my off-road club parks his truck at work in a spot that requires driving over a concrete median to get in. That's his way of discouraging theft by tow truck lol.

 

Look, there's being safe or taking precautions. But you guys are sounding really paranoid and terrified.

 

I'd be pretty surprised if the 4R didn't use rolling codes.

 

I take people exploring for a side-hustle, in a very low-crime area. One time my guests parked next to some Euro sitting in the parking lot, working on his kayak. We started the walk, and about a half mile in passed another Euro kayaker (judging by his accent, lol, because I say hello to everyone), also just sitting in the shade, working on his boat. We were gone about an hour. They called me later to say that while we were hiking, someone broke into their car, stole their credit cards, put everything back in place, and then charged up $3000 at the Shingle Springs Target. What a fricken bummer. I think one read the code, and the dude at the river phoned back when we were there, safely away from the parking lot.

And yes, there's a direct correlation between windshield glass at the trailhead and clouting. The only time I got clouted was down in tweaker central, Riverside County, and in hindsight I found broken windshield glass everywhere.

 

In my view, disabling the key fob at night or if you are nearby the car is a good idea....I have taken to doing that every night and in some other places while parked.
Other than that the OBD port is a weak point and do wish we could get a good port lock here in the US.....or maybe I just have not found one.
Other than that....if they roll up and tow it from my driveway....I guess they deserve it if they have bawls that big. Then it is an insurance issue.

 

Leave a quarter tank of gas only in it. They can't get far

 

Well, it won't fit in the garage (unless I climb out the back hatch) so cameras, lights, dogs, and guns will have to suffice.
