When I turn the wheel to the maximum travel I get a very loud squeal. I thought it was a belt, but if you look 7 seconds into the video you see the pulley itself stop accompanied by the chirp (focus on the nut in the center of the pulley).

What is going on here and should I tighten it or is there some other problem?

I recently replaced the belts, I don't remember touching that bolt but I could have by accident.

Never go to the max...and if you do, just back off a little.

Regardless, the belt is probably a little loose and when you go max travel, you are spiking the load on the pump and it slips.

After replacing belts I have to re-tighten after a few weeks anyways as they stretch.

Here's a better video of the problem. It's not the belt slipping, it's the pulley itself. I didn't have this happen before the belt change, it'd increase RPM but no chirp at max turn.

It's a small issue, but it shouldn't happen. I tried tightening the bolt a little but I hesitate to go further. I cant tell is the pump itself is stopping, or the pully is slipping on the shaft.

The pump is stopping because the belt is slipping, tighten the belt more, if you let it keep slipping it will wear the belt out!

The pump is stopping because the rack can't move any further and it spikes the pressure in the line which puts load on the pump which requires more friction from the belt.

There should be a bypass valve in the pump but it takes a good deal of pressure to open.

Your belt is right at that edge where it can't make the pump move because of that spike in pressure from the rack.

How much do I have to tighten it so that it doesn't slip and squeal before the bypass valve opens? I already tightened it a bit and it is still doing it.

Should I keep tightening it or is the additional tension on belt more damaging to the bearing than whatever happens to the belt when it slips along the pulley?

Hard to say. The belt should allow some deflection when you wiggle it but not much.

If it were me, I'd leave it for a few weeks and then look at tightening it after it has stretched. I think my PS pump belt has to be pretty darn tight.

Did you use Toyota belts? I wonder if other belts slip easier.

If you wait and the belt keeps slipping it will damage/glaze the belt, tighten the belt until it stops slipping, if it stretches later and starts slipping again, tighten again, that's what's the adjustment is for, you will not damage the bearing, the bearing is design for the pump to work without slipping.....OR don't tighten it and listen to it slip and ruins the belt, then you can replace it again and go through all this again!!!

I used Toyota belts. I'll try taking a photo that shows how tight the belts are

Toyota said the fan clutch was starting to go bad...
I replaced the fan clutch and the issue stopped
