Please help: First time buyer, What should I ASK?

I am returning to the US next week, looking for a 3rd gen.

I'm watching a few "nice" ones in the $6-9k range, but I found this "needs work" one cheap (leaves me a budget to make it 'mine'). I am mechanically inclined and prefer to do all my own maintenance.

I almost feel like showing up with an alternator and a wrench; what do yall think?

I'm about to email the owner; please add any questions I may not know to ask because this is my first 3rd Gen...

I'm asking him the following:
1. When was the last time you had it running?
2. What does NOT work, i.e. windows, locks, sunroof, etc?
3. Any lights? i.e. engine, ABS, airbag etc?
4. What makes you say its he alternator?
5. Besides the possible alternator, any other issues?

 

Welcome. I would go take a look at it and maybe even take a mechanic with you to do an inspection.
