Has anybody tried out the RIPP performance coil packs? Their website says they give you a 10- 15 HP boost and improved fuel economy. Anyone can say it is too good to be true, but let’s see if anyone has real experience with them.

I had to look... what it doesn't say is if the claimed added power was with a supercharger or just 91 octane fuel. I would bet those are an important part of a S/C built engine. As for our engines, I bet it is close to snake oil. Toyota could tune these engines further but 300k+ miles is better marketing!

When you supercharge an engine, ignition upgrades are a must. 10-15hp gain with just upgraded coils seems like a stretch. Maybe with a reflashed program in the computer, then if someone reflashed the computer, maybe you wouldn't need the coils to gain the horsepower.?

It certainly looks that way. If you could really get the kinds of gains they are selling I’d think these would be very popular, but I haven’t heard anyone crowing about them. Plus, not cheap and have to use 91 octane- maybe even a supercharger as Ryan points out!

Can you say JC Whitney? If you put all their shit on your vehicle, you'd be takin' gas out yer tank and dialin' back the power so as not to fry yer tires. LOL!

I witnessed this setup on the dyno it did show a 14hp increase and a smoother idle I didn’t go through with it because I want to see longer term usage my truck has only 8k on it so I’ll wait

I put them in my 19 TRD ORP. I’m happy! After watching their Dyno run online and seeing the numbers I bit the bullet and pulled the trigger. It definitely helps!

No gains and I'll take that to my grave until I personally see a proper dyno sesh (most are done incorrectly...) that illustrates results.

This is snake oil and the difficulty and confusion surrounding dyno testing is what fuels it.

It's simple science. I've been in the car game for decades and these always pop up for each model because there is sheeple money to be taken. The only ones that should be interested are the guys who have fully built their motors, and frankly probably already have a better (custom) solution.

Unless I missed something I see a guy that says he tried it out and used his butt dyno for results.

    Seems legit.

So I’ve had them on for a few weeks now and I can tell a real difference. Areas where the Runner would normally down shift on the highway it now holds 5th....

I guess it'll take a member on here to do a before/after dyno run and settle this once and for all. Butt dyno's a bitch.

This would answer a lot of questions and tell how modifications affect each other.
I have wanted one for year. Not sure why they aren't more popular.

Its still in some way a electronic butt dyno. LOL.

But I've used one in the past when I had a TBSS and they are kinda accurate.

    "Kinda accurate" is also misleading...
With current technology & math (distance & time) you can get accurate results. It takes x amount of power to move x amount of weight with x sized tires to obtain a result. I am not a scientist but I guarantee G Tech has a few on staff...
Shit, your phone can tell you the speed you are traveling!

For these to work, it would mean implying that the OEM coil packs are not capable of producing adequate voltage to detonate a charge... which I have a hard time believing. These alone are not magically putting more or cooler air/fuel into the chamber. If there are any gains shown in the dyno, it could be some marginal gain from using a higher octane fuel, and/or cherry picking results (as you can run a dyno multiple times in a row, with 0 changes, and see variations in the results).

I don't doubt that they're great coils; and a great upgrade, it you have a tune or forced induction, or something that would make them useful. I just have a hard time imagining how these alone would make an impactful difference. RIPP also has a history in the Jeep community of overstating and overhyping performance products. Even with their superchargers... you would constantly find used kits for sale in the forums from underwhelmed owners.

There's also the effect where one buys an upgrade, and gets this sort of sense of euphoria or satisfaction upon completion of install... and this carries over into the test drive while still riding that feeling. This leads us to believe things like "Hey, the throttle response IS better now!" and "Wow, this is so much smoother than before!. Also, unless a mod makes something obviously worse, it's often hard to convince ourselves that what we just spent our money on didn't improve things somehow.

Anyways, that's just my "woke up tired and grumpy, and haven't had any coffee yet" 2 cents, lol.

^ Yup but hey, at least yours was longer and better worded than my "I've already said this on the interwebs 100 times before so blahhhh" comment lol.

But yes, these days I'd say telemetry devices are an even better way to measure real gains than a dyno because it's like there are 10 people in the USA that actually understand and know how to work dyno's. It's so hard to compare dyno results, EVEN IF the results are on the SAME dyno and on the SAME day.. there are still many variables. Dyno's are best used for tuning (static drive-train resistance).

Kinda accurate is absolutely not misleading it is not 100% accurate. It does work for the most part.

But if you are trying to prove hard numbers instead of a butt dyno.

I had a buddy put these on his runner. They lasted about a year then started throwing all kinds of codes (coil pack failure circuits A&B) on all 6 packs, the truck wouldn't run. He put the stock packs back on and it ran just fine. I might steer clear.

I replaced one of mine last year with the better option that NAPA had in stock. Bosch or delco…dont remember which. Cheaper than toyota. Runs good…My number 6 cylinder now has 15 percent more power, it’s amazing ;)

    Oh, don’t ask lol
