Passenger floor Wet

'23 TRD ORP with 2,900 miles.

Noticed yesterday that my Passenger side carpet was pretty soaked under the rubber floor mat while installing remote start. Mostly wet on the side nearer the sill plate.

It hasn't rained in a while here, although I do go through the touch-free car wash here and there. Where does one start to look for a leak?

 

My first thought HVAC, I leave my AC Heater on auto year round so that both the heater and A/C work together to keep the evaporation from causing an issue (bad smells , etc… ). I’m a novice on the whole process but when it’s passenger floor that’s my first thought. The other 2 would be roof rack or sun roof. Any mods to the factory roof rack?

There was a ton of good information posted this week when a guy was having wet floor issues on the driver side. Lot’s of folks were using lawn trimmer string, etc.. to ensure there were no debris in the drains for the sun roof. They had questions like see if the seatbelts are wet, etc..

 

If you have a sunroof, sunroof drains. Or take it to the dealer, you're still under warranty.

He shows even after using lawn trimmer string and air pressure the little white plastic filters at the end of the drain tube get clogged with sediment and it causes the exact issue you are having. Pretty easy fix. After removing two pieces of trim clean the filter and you should be fine.

 

I had this issue but it turned out to be the rear hatch seal letting water in and it coming all the way forward. I bought a new seal but haven’t changed it yet to see if that fixes it.

 

Exact same thing happened to me. String went right through. Fittings on the end would close right back up. Took the fittings off and I've been high and dry since... ...especially high...

Thanks for the replies.... isn't it kind of odd for the Moonroof drains to be clogged? I garage park it, I dont have any trees or anything that I'm ever around, I dont go mudding.... its only got 2,900 miles and 4 months old. I am kind of skeptical, but hey, nothing surprises me anymore these days lol

 

Do you still have street tires on your truck?

 

So I've posed this question before and don't remember getting an answer - does anyone know why those filters are at the end of the front drains to begin with? I don't think they're on the rear.

I'm gonna run weed whacker line through mine when it warms up just as a preemptive strike and was thinking of just removing the filters. I can't think of any logical reason they would be on there but they must serve some purpose?

 

Is it really that they don't have a filter, or are they just less prone to clogging? They sure don't seem as easy to clean.

 

I thought the rears drained out through the rear wheel well so it's just an open tube at the end but I could be wrong. I'd have to read other threads again and try to find a diagram.

I just don't understand having a filter on them at all unless it's to keep mud from plugging them up at the bottom but then they just trap all the shit washing down from the top. I don't feel like a filter is necessary

 

The filter could be to keep spiders or other insects from entering the tube and building webs, nests etc.

 

That's actually a good thought. I can't imagine they would go through the expense and trouble to put them on if they only cause trouble. I've always just struggled with the idea of why you need to filter the water coming down from the moonroof before it drips out.

 

If you garage it, my guess would be a manufacturering issue.

It seems to me that in the last couple of years there have been more issues with the late model 4Runners.

 

Seems super odd especially if you keep it so clean. Please let us know what you find. Good thing you noticed it. It is rare I’d would check that passenger side or for a guest to go over there.

 

I’m with you on being skeptical. We joined about the same time and my ‘23 has just over 7000 miles and I would be astonished if mine were clogged. I rarely open my sun roof. Maybe 5 times since I’ve owned the truck. You could test before you remove the trim. Pour some washer fluid down the front passenger drain hole to see how fast it drains. If it’s slow I’d assume something is causing it to not drain properly.

 

Update: The other day I was going through the touchfree carwash, and sure shit... water dripping onto the passenger side floormat from under the glovebox!

I looked and did not see any *obvious* way for water to get in, besides the windshield cowl. Guess its time to make a dealer appointment, arrrggghhhhhh

No sunroof and I hand wash only.

One of the sunroof drain tubes could've detached from the surround.

Check the cabin air filter for wetness, in case water is coming in from the cowl intake.

Pull out the front pass seatbelt and check for signs of water, in case one of the roof rack bolts is leaking.

Sorry, I had a Dealer appt and had to cancel it. I will post back as soon as I get it back in and looked at. Hopefully its something that will help everyone because I have also read on the web its a thing on other forums too.

 

Thanks for the response. I check after every car wash especially since I have an aftermarket roof rack. Just one of those things I’d like to pre-empt.

 

It definitely leaks from under the glovebox in the car wash (disclaimer: I get a LOT of touch-free car washes as me and my spouse own one, lol). But, it still happens in the rain. Basically if its wet outside somehow, its getting inside.
