Hey people, new to this forum as I’m getting my 2021 Nightshade next Friday. Living in the great white North here in Ontario Canada we get lots of snow and road salt, people generally get their vehicles oils sprayed by somebody like Krown or Rust Check. I have done it in the past to my other vehicles and seams to protect from rust pretty well. I have heard lately that the oil spray may damage some of the rubber weather stripping in the door, trunk and hood seals. Starting to see some stretching on my 2010 Honda Pilot door seals now, but maybe it’s just the age and not the oil? Anybody have any opinions or experience with this? Thanks!

That is what we used to do when I was younger, and worked well. But...that said, the metals were thicker and much more durable. These days I use amsoil HD rust protectant before any rust. I know on the Tundrras forum, People like Fluid Film.

Regarding the rubber seals..yea, that does aid in the softening and stretching.

Welcome from Wisconsin! I have heard of this before. Grew up on a farm, and we used to spray used oil from oil changes on gravity boxes, plows, disc, wagon under carriages, etc. I think it was cost effective since there were so many pieces to coat, but I'm still believing a spray rust inhibitor is probably a little better choice, plus the fact it's formulated toward automotive use in mind, like the road salt and such. I don't think there's anything wrong with it though, other that it maybe hard on door seals, and you probably want to keep it off the rotors.

Crown, fluid film, wool wax just a few that stand out. Would you rather have a frame that’s rust free and some “weaker” rubber parts, or rusted crap with maybe some good rubber parts?

now that I am in the know, I do my best to get the yearly rust proof spray down.

I am not sure where in Ontario you live but Krown in Waterloo is fantastic. If you go on their site they always have a promo of some sort to print off. I just had me 2020 done there and they did a good job.

note: make sure you take off your sill plates after and clean under them. When they drill the holes in the door frame metal shavings always get under it and will rust leaving marks on your paint and eventually rusting the door sill as well. Or do like I do and use masking tape on the seam between the sill and the plastic before taking it in.

Krown and rustcheck are among the worst you can get. Don’t forget these also will kill all your rubber seals. In 3 years all your weather strips will hang under the door.

I wool waxed my 2020 myself with a gun and wand. Used a gallon of LPS3 and worked fantastic, very happy. LPS3 STAYS on the frame and underbody, not washed off from puddles and rain. Also , I would not trust anyone doing it, Are they going to lower your spare and his that area well?? Are they going remove all protection plates and hit the rad support and all the components well?? Took me 4 hours

They let me in the shop with the guy doing it and told me to tell him whatever I want done. I loaded her up big time. I paid $80cad. For the price, it’s hard for me to do it. Plus it’s too late now, I have to go with this one till the end of time :)

I used tor work as manufacture rep for corrosion protection company from Sweden. Any wax or oil with solvent will damage rubber in time. Solvent will evaporate. You do not want put any type of solvent based corrosion protection product rubber or plastic. What I use is 0% solvent and spray type. Will last about 5 years or more. I did lab test also.

That’s pretty cool. For sure for my next car I’ll do it myself.

Engine oil undercoat? It doesn't work, people use to do it back in the day but its been proven ineffective. Much better off with fluid film or CRC rust protection.

Got it done, no Krown. Used a place that sprays a product very similar to Fluid Film, called ProLab. Very impressed with the end result. It’s been a couple of weeks and two highway drives later, still looking nice and greasy. Very happy with the results and ready for a salty winter!7DD7E2CA-1231-4556-AF3D-9C13784F54F3.jpg7DD7E2CA-1231-4556-AF3D-9C13784F54F3.jpg

hey, did he lower the spare and hit the area good?? Also, I removed the foam that is under my radiator (2020 4runner) and could not believe how many leaves were stuck in it with only 10k. alot of guys on this forum have heavy rust issues there, I advice you remove tht piece of foam and hit that area with woolwax!

No one really knows. It is a tin piece, nothing crazy but it holds in alot of moisture and crap.
