Oil filters

The local oil change place has two oil filter choices, carquest or fram. Is one better than the other? I’ve never used either.

 

I'd go anything over Fram.

 

Get the OEM and give it to them. No need to run anything else other than a $5 OEM filter.

 

I know fram had problems in the past. Do those problems still exist?
I’ve learned carquest filters are made by the company that took over wix. I had good luck with wix filters in the past.

 

Id rather use old OEM filter again than new Fram.

You are making a mistake that you will regret. Don't go to quick-lube places for oil change with 4Runner.

 

Not sure if Fram still has issues and I never had issues with their products but stopped using their oil filters when it was an issue.

 

If I remember correctly the Fram problems were with the cheap orange canister filters. I like their fram ultra series. Anyone seen problems with the type we use in 4runner just the filter no can? Personally OEM meets my needs.

 

Any difference on paper other than just the brand? I'd worry more about the job being done and done properly by a shop like that.

My dad's '01 RAV4 had a semi-steady diet of Fram orange cans if I remember and it's still kicking, probably around 200k by now. I know they're a meme though so YMMV.

I've been getting Wix for the family Honda's and OEM from the dealer for the 4Runner. I would take Fram over an Amazon "OEM" or eBay special any day though.

Heck, those white/blue (well, one of those is gone now) SuperTech cans were fine and didn't give me bad oil analysis readings when I ran them in the Kia for ~50k miles before it was sold at ~130k - but I only ran those to maybe 4000 miles tops since the engine they were stuck onto is notorious.

But you're going to get a wide variety of answers, ask 10 folks, get 10 answers.

 

Used Fram, Purolator since I was 16 on all my vehicles. Never had an issue. But I will get OEM now on.

 

agreed, they’ll torque your filter housing down to 100 ft lbs( thats if they even truly change the filter) double up on your drain plug gasket and torque that to 150 and put 5 qrts of oil in it.

 

I had a neighbor who went to a quick-lube place for an oil change. 8yrs later...BAM. Herpes!
