Oil change problem

Hi all,
Went to dealer today to get my 10K service. Gets done pretty quickly and drive home and pull into my garage. About a half hour later I have to go on another appointment and pull out of garage and head to appt. My wife send two pics which I dont look at while driving. She then calls me and says I am leaking oil. I then pull over and look under car and I can see a lot of oil dripping down.
I then call dealer and they said to get it towed in which I did. Finally get to dealer and they bring it in right away. Comes over to me later and shows me gasket whick looks like it was cut or torn. He said that sometimes happens. Geez! Towing was covered and they washed my car.
Anything I should know or watch out for? PS: When should the low oil indicator come on? I did not see it till I was empty.

Oh boy. I think I’d bring it somewhere else where it doesn’t “happen sometimes” next time.

 

The oil pressure light would come on when there is no oil pressure in the engine. There's no real level or time when it would happen. If it came on when the engine was running then there could be some bearing damage. Since the dealer did it, they will be responsible. I never use them for oil changes because the oil techs are just low paid people.

Just keep driving it.

 

Unfortunately really hard to tell how much oil was lost and if it did any damage.
If it was not a stream of oil, you should be fine
Do your own oil changes.

 

It had none in it when I checked dip stick when pulled over. Buy when I pulled over it was still leaking.

 

For what it's worth, after my first oil change at the dealer, I noticed oil dripping from the filter canister when I got home. Had to take it back to have them make it right. I've changed my own oil since and have not had the issue again.

 

Keep an eye on your engine. Overheating, unusual noise, loss in power. You can get an oil analysis in future to see any excessive wear and tear.

 

Get this documented in writing from dealer in case of warranty claims. Why I change my own oil.

 

And the legend of Toyota dealership screwups just keeps growing...

7 quarts of 0w20, oil filter, air filter, and cabin air filter waiting to go in tomorrow. At home.

 

Thanks guys. I am 72 years old and to old to be getting under a car and not to mention all the stuff you have to take off to get to drain plug. Hopefully all will be fine nd accidents do happen.

Good thing you went somewhere not too long afterward. What if you had parked it, left it until the next morning, then drove away without noticing the oil lake underneath...??!!

 

There's no oil level switch on this engine, only a low oil pressure light. If the light didn't come on while your engine was running, the oil pump was not starved and you should not have engine damage.

Go to an indie Toyota specialist shop for oil changes from now on or DIY. You'll be paying more, but not dancing with engine destruction each time.

An independent repair shop, not dealer affiliated, that specializes in Toyota.

 

It is hard to find a good honest dealership that does competent work. I just did my 1 year free oil change/tire rotation at a dealership I used to go to with my 2008 Highlander. Unfortunately I do not know anyone that works there any more. The first service rep was new and wanted to just do the 5,000 service w/o the oil change. I had to argue that it was time for the oil service at 1 yr regardless of mileage. (I did the first oil change myself at 1500) I removed the front skid plate myself before taking to dealer, and inspected the work when it was done. I had to wipe excess oil off the housing, and found a small nick in one wheel. Other than that, it was what I expected and it took less than and hour. I may go back for the two year service next Sept when I get near 10,000 on the odo.
