North Carolina Camping?

What's up everyone, I am new to owning a 4runner and I am wanting to learn more about rigging it out for camping and off-roading. Right now it's just me, my wife, my 8mo son, and our dog. Is there anyone in the North Carolina area that could recommend some cool places to check out for camping? Not looking for overrun public camp grounds, looking for off the beaten path, not super popular/but you won't get in trouble for being there type of places...

Also, if anyone has any rigging for camping (especially DIY) ideas and solutions? Don't have a ton of money to drop, but got time and skills to build things - would love to have something put together come spring time for everything.

What is your geographical location, Did not see it in your signature? I have had good success in and around Uwharrie as I am close but also in Eastern NC near VA, That are not super busy area but not well known.

 

You did not see it in my signature because I have no clue how to add it, haha. Or what all I need to add to help out - I am in central NC, travel all around from Winston to Raleigh, Burlington to be very specific.

Sadly, many many families in western NC are camping full time right now.

 

Native Tar Heel here. Hatteras And Ocracoke islands can be not crowded if you go in the off season and avoid holidays. 3 public campgrounds run by National Park Service and a number of private ones as well

 

Look for Forrest service land, I don’t know that area, but this past summer we spent sometime in the smoky mountains and found a bunch of free or cheap camping. We also stayed in George Washington National Forrest.
