Howdy bro’s and Bettys! Newbie here. Upgraded to a 16 4Runner after my 91 Bronco finally shit the bed. My SR5 Trail didn’t come with cross bars and I’d like to get a basket rack that mounts to the factory rails or rail attachment points without adding too much height. I’ve seen several that mount on top of the rails, but don’t want the added height. And it looks like garbage. Any and all suggestions would be appreciated! Thanks!

Welcome from Massachusetts.. I traded in my 2010 Ford Explorer for the 2020 4 runner and am quite happy so far. As for baskets, I have stock roof rack with rails and am considering them as well. I will check back after everybody gives their opinions and testimonials. Photos appreciated
    Cheers!

Hi Benjamaximus, there are a lot of options out there, and it’s a fun process looking at them all. When I was searching I decided early on that I didn’t want two roof racks, one fastened onto the other. The stock roof rack is quite limited also, it’s really a piece of light metal and plastic junk. You’ll see what I mean if you decide to replace the whole thing as I did, and actually remove it. I settled on a Front Runner, because it is so configurable and has so many accessories. I really wanted a platform style also. You can order side bars for it so that it’s a basket, and it looks great. I kept mine flat, for maximum flexibility. Mine is a 3/4, because that’s all I needed and I didn’t want to cover the sun roof. It’s pretty strong, looks great, and was easy to install. It’s only drawback is cost, which is high, but once you have something like that, the cost disappears as a factor, and you’re left with the satisfaction of having made a good decision and owning something that is useful and good quality.

A cheap low profile option is Rola.

Nfab also has one, but a bit more expensive.

D93B5DF1-A813-4EBB-85CF-152395199751.jpg I just took off the Yakima basket off the wife’s 4R. Let me know if you’re interested. Not sure where you’re located but shipping could get pricey.

I have the same Yakima, while good, it sits on the crossbars and I decided to but the nfab T102 one; pricey, but it is light, aluminum, flush with the roof and sits in the roofrails, not on top of the crossbars (noisier)
