    Hello,

I have recently moved to Ohio from Texas, and I'm totally new to this rust protection thing. Im have an appointment to get a Krown undercoating as I have read many reviews that as long as you are on top of getting it done every year it will keep your truck rust free. Now, here is the question I have. Im only up here temporarily until I move back my job to Texas. I know Krown drills holes in your doors to get their product in there, but I'm considering if that is really needed. I don't want to have holes drilled and then when I move back because im not getting the coating anymore those holes are going to create more problems. Plus not sure how bad these 5th gens rust. I know every vehicle will rust if not taken care of, but in terms of getting back inside the doors, if that would be a problem.

Just have them do underneath the truck & hose off any salt after a snow storm. Make it very clear not to drill any holes anywhere. Also if you can watch them do it keep an eye on them so they don't start drilling any holes.
I did undercoating just underneath my truck and cleaned the salt off after it snowed & no rust yet. My truck sits outside all the time 2021 TRD Off f Road Premium

The most important thing is that you remember it’s not Ohio State University, it’s THE Ohio State University.

My Krown guy shot inside the body panels without drilling any holes. Was able to snake through different access holes, some behind trim pieces like the door sills, and blast it everywhere. Still retained their warranty despite no drilled holes.

He knows I’m super picky with my car and it took him like 2-3 times as long to do this way. Very happy with the results. Would just talk with your Krown installer and see what they can do.

It wouldn't surprise me if they were to try to build one in South Carolina given how many people flee Ohio for SC.

I think this is the path Im going to go down. Just not keen on holes that could cause issues. If I was staying here for 10 years I would most likely have the holes done.

Since you’re apparently on a temporary assignment, you could just buy a local beater to commute with.

Ive toyed the idea, but since this summer I can start applying to mainline airlines, buying a beater for only a winter or two and having a third vehicle with insurance did not make sense.

I thought it was The World Famous Three-time Loser Ohio State University? Anyways, after 5 Michigan winters, my 4R looks fine underneath except for the heavy iron parts (hitch, knuckles etc)- the frame and body are fine. An underneath spray and a thorough wash after they salt is all you will need.

I had mine done at the local Krown and am very pleased. The underside looks great. I would highly recommend to buy a tarp and parking on it for 3-4 days if you are in your garage or driveway. I had mine done in the morning and then went to work where I can see all the oil drips covering my parking spot a month later. I wouldn’t want that in my garage.

The rocker panels have rubber plugs under the car so there should be no need to drill. If they want to drill the doors, I’d rather have them skip that. You could spray something in through the drains as long as you check they don’t get plugged up with whatever product you are using. One drawback is i used fluid film in the doors the mist can travel to areas that will make your windows get grease streaks when you lower/raise them. It goes away after a while though.

I wouldn’t do anything other than washing it 2-3 times (with undercarriage wash) after the highway department puts salt on the roads. If you’re limber, slide under with a garden hose and make sure the salt is cleaned off. Ohio doesn’t get snow like we do in western NY, and if you get lucky, you won’t deal with salt much at all.

If you moved to Ohio for work, I would tell your employer you need a rental and keep the 4R parked. As a Michigan boy sorry you had to go to Ohio and please do not punch a hole and put a front plate on :)

Just messing around hope you enjoy the stay and drink some PA beer (Yuengling is available in Ohio)

They got rid of front plates.

Condolences to OP for having moved to Ohio. There are plenty of nice places to visit though, just look for the Welcome to PA/WV/KY/IN/MI signs :D

Really though, find a place that’ll apply Fluid Film, Woolwax, or similar. Their websites (FF and WW do) generally have locators for application businesses.

Yea, I've heard this, but being in an apartment I really don't have access to a garden hose that often. Funny enough they were salting the roads today as I was going to get the underside done. Plus I feel like if i miss a hard to reach are with the salt while washing it myself that is enough for rust to start.

Went to Walmart and grabbed a cheap oversized tarp to cover my whole garage floor. Thought this was a great idea so I don't have to keep it parked outside

Yeaa starting to realize that lol. Only here for a little while.

Unfortunately, if you want anything other than that Ziebart junk that costs $700+ you have to travel over an hour. And Krown was the closest and better price for a product that does just as good as the others. Heard lots of people using krown for 10 years with no rust.

In all honesty our winters and salt up here suck OH, MI, PA etc. I decided when I bought my 4R because of the frame and rust issue to park it for winter. It’s just a fair weather vehicle and comes out when the salt is done in spring. Even then I still had it fluid filmed. I am blessed though to have another car which I get many cannot afford.

When I was younger and could deal with the winter easier I used to take my other vehicles to the quarter car wash every Friday night in winter and get down on my knees and spray the underside with soapy water when it was not busy. I also took 5 gallon buckets and hand washed my trucks in 27-32 degree nights at the quarter car wash at night.

It’s too hard on me now to do that shizzo. But if you’re a young dude it will help preserve your ride for a bit. There’s a reason this is called the rust belt. It’s beautiful up here in summer but like everything else in life comes with trade offs.

Texas requires a front plate. It’s one of the things I liked about moving to PA as I hated having a front plate.

My state requires a front plate too, but did I install it?...hellz no. Been driving it that way for a year with no attention from the police.
