Greetings everyone, I have had my new to me 3rd Gen for a month and half and really enjoy it so far as my daily for work. I've been working on cleaning it up and some basic maintenance, but have not been able to find out what goes in the cubby on the passenger side in the cargo area. I've tried searching google, here and other forums, but am not sure what it would be called. Anyone know what I'm missing in here? I've poked around enough to know its not the jack, that's under the backseat. Is it some kind of additional tool kit? Thanks for any info!IMG_20230111_101528023_HDR.jpg

I don't recall straps like that in my 3rd gen. Looks like someone added them, possibly for a tool roll or fire extinguisher?

Those straps are stock. Bought my 2002 brand new from the dealer. Nothing went there then either. (I am the first and only owner)

The jack and all those pieces are under the rear seats.

The tow hitch is too big to go in there.

Maybe the Limitteds got something else to go in there.

Mu 4th gen had a similar cubby with straps. The trailer hitch fit perfectly in mine.

The straps are stock, my 2000 SR5 4x4 has them. Mine included a spare tool kit and bottle jack put there by the original owner. The kit under the rear seat is brand new and has rarely seen the light of day.

Part way through the 3rd generation 4runner Toyota added those straps in. Earlier ones as late as 1998 don't have them, but they were definitely stock. The cubby shape in older 4runners is a square, later ones like yours have a larger opening that extends over the wheel well.

I haven't heard of Toyota putting anything there from factory. It's possible that in other markets they did, I could see them using it for a first aid kit in Japan. But that's a total guess. Your not missing anything, Toyota put the tire kit under the rear seats.

I think MAYBE if I can remember that far back, the hitch did fit without the ball on it. Once the ball went on, it wouldn't fit. Maybe I'll go out and take a look.
