New ORP on way- Transition from Tacoma

I just put a deposit down on a 2023 ORP in Silver Metallic. $49,306 out the door. Has the moonroof, all weather cargo mat, LED interior light upgrade and door edge guards-door cups. Paid $899 doc fee and $500 sales tax (SC caps at 500). Should be here in 17 days. Didn’t realize but the ORP comes with TRD floor mats. That’s not true on the Tacoma TRD OR. Glad to be a part of the 4 Runner community. I have been a Toyota fan for 24 years. I got the sales manager to delete the predator steps ($899) and the Toyoguard Platinum ($699) at the port. So dropped price $1598 from our previous agreement. The Toyoguard Platinum just seems excessive IMO. 2 oil changes, 4 tire rotations, interior and paint protector and roadside assistance.

The TRD mats are ok but I kept finding wet carpet so I upgraded to Husky Liners.

 

Yes, I hunt and will acquire some all weather mats at a minimum for front. I am off-road almost weekly on logging roads at my farm. Kept water proof boots in my Tacoma. Will do same with 4 Runner. I really think the Premium is too nice but I couldn’t find any regular TRD ORs.

Welcome. What didn't you like about the Tacoma? Asking because I am thinking about adding a Tacoma TRD Pro to my stable, in addition to the 4Runner.

 

I loved the Tacoma. Had a 2016 for 7 years. Had a 1999 before that for 17 years. My son is still driving it. I did have the dreaded timing chain cover oil leak (on 2016) at 7 years (59,000 miles)and required engine removal to fix. I sold it after repair and wanted to try a 4 Runner. I have always thought the 4 Runner was as capable (if not more so) off road as the Tacoma. I need a capable off road vehicle to hunt and care for my property and just decided to try a 4 Runner. It will be good for road trips also as my wife and I are retired. I have some timberland property with a nice network of logging roads which are hilly and sometimes wet. I also bow hunt near my home and have similar network of roads in that club. It won’t be long until both the 4 Runner and Tacoma are only available with small turbo internal combustion engines, if you don’t want a hybrid or electric vehicle. I see the new 4 Runner as a last opportunity to get a proven platform before changes occur I see as undesirable. Tacoma’s are great. I just have always wanted a 4 Runner and see it as now or never. BTW: paid $32,300 for Tacoma TRDOR in Feb 2016, sold for $30,000 about 2 months ago (7 years old).

 

If I could afford both, I’d have both. At one time we had both a runner and taco in the driveway, I just could not accept that neither of our daily driver vehicles got over 20 mpgs, so the runner went. It was only bought for a cross country trip anyways, but we liked it so much we kept it an extra year or so. Well, we decided we missed the runner so I traded my taco in for the new runner. Some day I hope to find an old taco to bring home, but that’s a ways away.

 

Spare Parts, I’m kinda the same way. Really can’t afford to have both, so trying a 4 Runner while still being made. I like getting them new and taking good care of them.

 

I just came from a Tacoma myself. I have younger kids and they were outgrowing the back. Also, I wasn't a fan of the trans...it always fought to stay in low rpms. I find the 4r to drive much nicer and really happy with the change. Congrats on the purchase.

 

The Tacoma V6 (2 GR) has both direct injection and port injection compared to the 4 Runner which is port only. The Tacoma needs an additional high pressure fuel pump for the direct injection. The system is more complex but works well. I didn’t have any issues with mine over 7 years.

 

Had a 2010 Tacoma TRD Sport 4WD that I drove for 12.5 years before I replaced it with a 2023 4Runner Limited 4WD. The 2010 Tacoma has about 145K miles on it - it is my youngest son's everyday driver now. He was driving a 2016 Chevy Cruze that I had inherited from my father. He wanted the Tacoma - and it was actually worth about $1000-$2000 more than the Chevy - but I traded him the Tacoma in an even trade and traded in the Chevy Cruz when I bought the 4Runner. The 2010 Tacoma was about the best vehicle I've ever had - for sure with respect to reliability. The only thing that was ever replaced under warranty on it was the AC/Heat system fan - which started chirping about a year after I bought it. Never had another issue with it after that - and it still runs great - my son will probably drive it to 200K+ miles. Back in 2010 the Tacomas had the 4.0L 1GR-FE engine that is in the 4Runners now. It was the 236HP single VVTi version instead of the 270HP dual VVTi that is in the 4Runners - but still the same basic engine. As rmiked stated above, it is just a matter of time before the 4Runners and Tacomas have smaller displacement turbocharged engines and 8-10 speed transmissions for gas mileage purposes. I wanted a 4Runner with the 1GR-FE engine and the A750 tranny before they stopped making them - I don't care if it gets less than 20mpg. I only put 9-10K miles per year on my everyday driver and when I retire within the next 4 years it will be even less than that. It will probably take me 15 years to put 100K miles on this 4Runner. I miss the Tacoma - until I get in the 4Runner and drive it - and if I need to haul branches to the mulch site or pick up a load of mulch I can borrow it from my son. Its almost as good as owning a 4Runner and a Tacoma at the same time

Tacoma’s last year as 2 GR V6 is now! Probably release the small turbo version by December this year.

 

My Tacoma 3.5 V6 did not use any oil. I captured and measure it myself doing every oil change. Does the 4 Runner show similar oil consumption (practically zero) or can I expect it to consume some oil?

 

Welcome from a former 2013 Tacoma owner, also one of the best vehicles I've ever owned. I did not get rid of it for any other reason than I needed to sell it to finance my 4R in 2019. If my wife would have driven it or the 4R, I would have kept it. She thinks both of them are too big for her to drive comfortably.

I've not seen any threads about excessive or unusual oil consumption on the 4R forums.

The Tacoma 2GR-FKS is a car and crossover engine but for some reason it found its way into the Tacoma. The 1GR-FE is a truck/SUV specific engine that has legendary reliability and is the standard engine in the Land Cruiser 300 series sold throughout the Middle East. Very reliable and you certainly won't be disappointed. Congrats.
