New Land Cruiser - Meh

I'm not all that impressed. It's like Sequoia part 2, especially with the price. Toyota's going to be competing with themselves. Some of the standard features are nice, but it's still bigger than the 5th gen 4Runner. Yeah, standard full time 4WD plus locking center and rear diffs are nice, but the ol' SR5 4Runner does just fine. I don't see anything about doing a Wrangler/Bronco sort of topless get the tits out experience.

I'm just not all that impressed. They could've just put the lockers in the Sequoia and I probably would've been less unimpressed.

I am going to stare at it for a bit before I decide I like or dislike it.

Assuming this Prado(that they are not calling Prado) LC is not to replace the 4R, it is going put the 6th gen 4R in a tight spot dimension and price wise, unless the 4R does something dramatic to shave cost like moving out of Japan for production.

 

What worries me most about the Land Cruiser announcement, is now it seems it's supposed to be what the 4Runner currently is. When the new 4Runner is announced, it's going to have to differentiate itself. The new 4Runner can't obviously be more offroady than the LC, so that makes me wonder if the new 4Runner will be softer. Which can't be as the Highlander is getting more muscular.

Toyota's SUV line up is about to get kinda confusing.

 

I like it. I’d be willing to bet this is going to replace the 4r. Same Tacoma drivetrain, smaller than GX, lower price point. All spells doom for 4r. Just waiting on the press release that 23 is the last year.

I don't dislike it. I just think it's a bunch of wank. Or the Sequoia is a bunch of wank. Maybe this is just one big Toyota circlejerk.

 

What I hope they do for the next 4Runner is make a get the tits out experience that's not so expensive. Like Jeep but Toyota so you won't have to perform fellatio to the entire service department to not go bankrupt. $30,000 is probably hoping for too much in this day and age, but get it back down to the $35,000 range for 4WD with no lockers on a base model.

 

There is one direction they can go with the 4R: offer a 2 door version and go head to head with Broncos, Wranglers, and Defenders. Right now the 4R only competes with half of those models' line up. If Toyota moves production to say Mexico but offer a 2 door version, even people like me would be tempted.

 

Ya know honestly if Toyota moves the next 4Runner to a cheaper, smaller, and more raw version of itself I think the LC actually makes a lot of sense.

 

It’s interesting but not swooning over it. The round headlights are cool in a retro kind of way though. Sticking with my ‘23 5th gen for the long haul (unless we win the lottery and then maybe I’d splurge on a GX.)

 

The styling is a step in the right direction but the off-road goodies are not much better than the current TRD OR 4Runner and Tacoma. Not very compelling. I’m close to purchasing a new 4Runner TRD ORP and the new Land Cruiser does nothing to change my mind.

yes, I agree. They are starting to have too many 60k+ BOF SUVs that are getting a bit too fancy to get dinged and scratched on the trails. The Yen is cheap right now so it is their chance to go back to basics on at least one model, with the new "Land Cruiser" for the states they dpn't need the next 4R to crowd the field that the "LC" and Sequoia already play in, in addition to their high end crossovers.

After all, the 4Runner has been more "off-roady" than the US version of the Landcruiser since the late 90's.

Or, maybe there's another trim they're not announcing yet.

I thought the same thing for a minute. But, I'm not convinced. I'm not 100% confident you're wrong, but I think it's possible.

 

Kind of a crazy move if so. The 4Runner is is a much more common nameplate in North America, but maybe the thought was the LC is known as a more premium model name that could carry a higher price. Think about it though, if this was branded 4Runner, wouldn’t it make sense as an evolution of the platform? I just can’t see them carrying an extremely similar model unless they pull a bronco and make the 4Runner the ‘sport’ model, but that would be an insult.

 

Not at this base price point. And people can and do make all kinds of arguments about that, look at the stanning people did for the stark price increase from the Nissan 370Z to the current Z for one example, but that's not going to change the bank account of the person who was in the market for a 2023 but has gotten taken out of the market for the hypothetical 2024 and now can no longer get a rugged off roader but some cookie-cutter unibody lifted and obese car.

 

I am just going to keep my fingers crossed that they have something awesome up their sleeves, while preparing for disappointment.

Also, if they try to sell us a watered down unibody 4runner, I'm buying a Wrangler and starting an only fans. But, instead of taking my clothes off, people will pay money to watch me blow up a 4Runner.

 

The average price of 23s is over 50. Obviously not cheap, and cheaper trims are available, but a if a 55k LC is similar to the current 50k 4r that the majority of people are buying, that isn’t that stark.

 

If you think this is bad, it's because you just don't like anything new. This looks great. Way better than the 300 series with it's fat chin and ugly grill. Has nobody realized the grill isn't fucking huge? Thank god! It's gone against Toyota's worsening trend of over styling.

It's everything I hoped it would be, except a manual, and affordable. So maybe it isn't, but it's 300x better than the 300 series. There was never going to be a V8 engine, if your disappointed you had unreasonable expectations.

What are the dimensions?

 

As far as the Land Cruiser brand is concerned in the US, Toyota has killed it with this model. Smaller, narrower, less luxurious and with a 2.4 lt. This is no more a flagship vehicle. And I don't like that shade of blue.

However, this fits the bill perfectly as the new 4runner. It's similar in size, and starts at a comparable price point. It's boxy design will probably grow over time. Has all the 2024 creature comforts that a model one below the flagship should have. As a side note, suddenly my boxy 2011 now looks like a 2023 vehicle.

Having said all this, I am not sure if this is a master move by Toyota or a complete blunder. Time will tell.

 

The GX wheelbase is only like 2.36 inches longer than the current 4Runner/ previous GX wheelbase. So, it's not really that big.

I also agree with a lot of what you said. I'll have to look at some more pictures and video, but I thought it looked good overall aside from the front end being a little weird looking. But, maybe the lower part of the front bumper is just designed for fuel economy and they figure some people are just going to rip it off and put on steel bumpers anyhow.

Totally agree about anybody who was hoping for a V8. On the other hand, I sometimes "hope" that Taylor Swift will show up at my house and make sweet love to me and ask me to marry her. So, sometimes hope isn't exactly realistic, lol!

Anyway, the current 4runner is already too big, coming from someone with a 3rd gen. It had the perfect dimensions, I could still sleep in the back, but I could also slip into spots.

I doubt size is a deal breaker. But downsizing the vehicle would help with fuel economy and off road. Plus Toyota wouldn't have to resort to such "wicked technology" if the vehicle was smaller. Hopefully this means the 6th gen is smaller.

 

Oh, I definitely agree that, if they aren't killing the 4Runner, I would hope that the next generation is a hair smaller. I've been saying this pretty much all along. The fact that the new Land Cruiser is only a little bigger than the 4Runner definitely sets it up for that possibility.

 

Well, I finally watched the whole video. And, ya know what? I fucking want one!
