Late yesterday evening Jeep lifted the press embargo for the redesigned of the Grand Cherokee. This is the fifth generation of Grand Cherokee since the original one, with name code ZJ, went on sale for the 1993 model year.

This is the first redesign of the Grand Cherokee in a decade, and it boasts improvements in infotainment and creature comforts. The interior has been improved, with a larger screen, cameras that can show front occupants the rear seats, night vision, and standard blind spot monitoring.

There will be two versions of the Grand Cherokee, the standard version and the long wheel base version (designated Grand Cherokee L) that comes with 3 rows of seats with a capacity of 7. The standard Grand Cherokee will be revealed later in 2021.

The long wheel base version is 6.9 inches (175 mm) longer than the current version with 2 rows of seats. The new model has independent front suspension, and multi-link rear suspension. This setup improves on road comfort at the expense of off road capability; the last generation was already compromised when it came with four wheel independent suspension so it won't ben good for anything beyond muddy parking lots. Not that you would go much further when 18 inch wheels are standard, with 21 inch wheels optional on higher trim.

Further signs of the 4x4 move away from off road credibility is in it's approach angle at 20.6 degrees standard, down from 26.2 last generation. This improves to 30.1 degrees approach on models equipped with optional air suspension. Departure angle is also down from last generation. The break over angle also decreases, but this is on the long wheel base version, expect better break over angles on the short wheel base model.

The new Cherokee comes with spring suspension, but you can get air suspension on higher trims. Other options include captain chairs in 2nd row that provide more comfort but decrease seating capacity. The vehicle will come in 2 and 4 wheel drive, paired to a 8 speed automatic and a standard Pentastar 3.6L V6 engine or available 5.7L Hemi V8. Neither of these engines are new to the Grand Cherokee.

Theses will be produced in FCA factory in Detroit Michigan. FCA (Fiat Chrysler Automotive) will transition into being called Stellantis after its merger with French automotive company Peugeot on January 16, 2021(8 days away as of writing).

I'm sure it would make for a great daily driver (less all the potential drop offs for warranty repair). Kind of looks like they borrowed a designer from the dodge division for the L version styling.
