New 5VZ FE engine

    I Have just ordered a new 5VZ FE engine for my 1999 SR5 2WD. I was right at 250,000 miles when the head gasket blew. Needless to say, it was prohibitive to rebuild since I don't do (or care to do) a job of that magnitude. I considered a JDM swap but I've learned that the whole JDM thing and their mileage is a total scam. Through my online research, I found Jarco.com. They are the official provider of Toyota engines to Toyota dealerships nationwide. Toyota does not have older crate engines in stock but will order and sell you one from Jarco.
    The bottom line is that Toyota dealerships want to charge you $17,900 for a new 5VZ FE. who has that? I went directly to Jarco and bought one for $4200. I am retired and planning a long 48 state trip so having a new engine was important. It takes 2 months to get it built and I will report back how the install goes. They tell me August 16th for delivery. I'm pretty excited. Not all of us were meant to be mechanics. I just love to drive my 4runner!

    None. Bone Stock. EXCEPT: Brushguard, tow hitch, both welded to the frame. It's good to have friends and a fully equipped garage!
    Seems a bit excessive to replace the entire engine for a bad head gasket. Any decent mech could replace the HG for a good deal less than installing a whole new engine. Do the timing belt and water pump, maybe a new radiator, at the same time, and it would most likely still come out less than even the cost of a new engine, not counting the labor to put it in.

    But hey, you do you, as the new saying goes.

    Actually GLwood54, the work I did last year with a JDM engine was on my son's 98 4runner. It was all sunshine and rainbows for about 2 months until it locked up. I learned a lot from that experience. Mainly that JDM engines are not what they purport to be. I will admit I was completely wrong in my approach. The 99 4R (mine)is one I've had for about 18 of its 22 years. I've taken good care of it with routine maintenance. However, a head gasket lasting 22 years is amazing in itself. On the JDM engine, we changed the timing chain, water pump and the tensioner and all the bearings, valve cover gaskets and put in a new toyota radiator and still had a catastrophic failure internally. To Phantom Tweak I would say that again I am retired and planning a long trip. I saved my pennies and have no problem spending money on my project car. Its all I have going right now ;)

    Agree, replacing an engine for a bad head gasket seems a bit much unless you drove it a lot with the bad HG. If your blowing a head gasket after little more than a year since engine swapping you either got a bad engine or your maintenance intervals are too long.

    OP replied right after I clicked published. Makes more sense
