New 2021 TRDORP incoming - wheel and tire questions

    Hello,

    New member here, learning a lot by reading a ton. In two weeks I'll be taking delivery of my first T4R, a 2021 TRDORP in magnetic gray. This being my first foray into the T4R world I have a few questions:

    1) stock tires - how well do they perform on roads in rain/snow

    2) I've seen more than a few posts about upgrading those stock tires. But I also want to change out the stock ORP wheels. Which would you recommend first?

    I think most people would agree the stock tires never tend to be good, but I’d still get my miles out of them, then switch out. I’m willing to bet they will be fine for a year or so.

    Welcome to the forum!

    I would try to change both at the same time, if possible. I did the tires first because the Dunlops were awful in the snow.

    If you do the tires right away, some places will actually give you some money for them. Or, you can sell them to someone for a few bucks.

    When I put new sneakers on my taco, I did wheels and tires, and I’m glad I did it that way. After putting on the new stuff, I had an front wheel well issue, not even space in front and behind the tire. The dealership tried to tell me it was the new tires. I switch back to the factory setup, and showed them it was the same issue, just not as clear as the new tires had more meat. Then they tried to convince me the body panels moved. Well after pushing back, it was discovered after a front end accident, they (the same dealership) never did the front end alignment they said they did.

    so after that issue was cleared up, I had a wicked vibration with the new setup, so I again switched back to prove the vibration wasn’t the truck, but the new tires where out of balance even though balanced twice. And now that I am think of trading in, I can slap the factory setup back on and already have a new set for the possible new 4Runner.

    If you plan to just drive on road stock tires are fine. My buddy is fully stock and he refused to get new tires swearing up and down they're good, he finally relented after 30k miles and getting stuck a few times in mild snow and mud

    In my case, I would have done both wheels and tires at the same time, except I was satisfied with the factory rims. I felt it important to at least get the tires upgraded since I had a lift/level coming. Glad I did, because I had minor mud-flap rub issues with the new BFG KO2's (which was resolved with the lift/level). FYI it helped that Discount Tire cut me a deal and gave me some $ back for the factory tires.

    Just my two cents but I have an SR5 I swapped out the tires to BF good rich KO twos left a stock rims and I’m having a blast with that

    Regardless what people say, stock tires are just M+S so it will never be good on snow as an after market 3peak mountain snow flake rated all weather or all terrain tire. You should be able get good amount of money when you sell stock tires when they are new with Craigslist / FB market place for all 5 tires.

    My fav tire brand is BFG KO2. Next is GY Wrangler Duratrac. Third best Falken Wildpeaks.


    I absolutely love TRD ORP wheels because they are wider wheels which is recommend to use with bigger tires like 285/70R17 or even 285/75R17 (34 inch) tire. I would not recommend buying TRD Pro wheels like some do. If you ever think of changing wheels look at a good after market wheel.

    Most aftermarket wheels are junk, believe it or not your stock trd off road wheel is better than 99 percent of the crap out there

    Why not pro wheels? That’s what I put on my taco and plan to switch over if I get a 4runner

    TRD Pro wheels are narrower than TRD ORP wheels. They do not meet the minimum to mount bigger tires like 285/70R17.

    RevTek 3" front- 2" rear leveling, JBA uca's, LED interior lights, Cooper 275-70-17 AT3 LT
    We put upgraded tires on the factory rims at first (275-70-17 Cooper AT 3) Then we bought some aftermarket rims and moved the Cooper tires over to them. Both rims look ok, but the grass is always greener..... right?     Did you get the tires from the dealer? Or buy separately, deliver to dealer, have them install and work out a deal for the stock rubber? And why go with the 275-70-17 vs the 265-70-17?

    We got the tires from the dealer, who got them from the tire shop close by. The dealer installed a lift and tires at the same time. We went with the 275 because of the 'E' rating, that's what we run, I'm very "anti-rock abrasion", and when we go off road that's what we encounter most...rocks. Not that 'E' rating is the best, it just affords a little more protection, at a little more weight/reduction in fuel mileage (18+)
