Need to replace the fuel pump assembly. Recommendations?

2005 Toyota 4Runner Limited 4.7L (Wife's)

Well, after 265,000+ miles the fuel gauge sending unit finally crapped out.

With the high mileage involved I figure it's best to replace the entire assembly versus trying to repair it.

Looking online, dealers are in the $600 range for an OEM replacement. Aftermarket is slightly cheaper for a known brand name such as Delphi and Carter.

Are there any other recommendations I should be looking at or just bite the bullet and go with OEM?

 

I would try and find a Denso fuel pump assembly, Denso is the OEM supplier for Toyota, you get an OEM part but without the Toyota name on it or the Toyota price.

 

I recently did the the fuel pump and sending unit on my 2004 4.7, not the entire ‘assembly’ though. OEM Toyota parts for both. It was like $300ish for parts and $300ish for labor. Now fuel gauge is working flawlessly and I have a new fuel pump. Just another option besides doing the entire assembly.

 

I have read that the plastic carrier has a secondary internal filter. What did you do about that?

 

Ok sorry, for one I was off on my parts amount and two I did purchase the filter as well… here’s what I bought:

(the ignition coil was just to have a spare one on hand)



Labor was $363 if I recall.

 

Had my fuel sending unit replaced in June 2022 and did the fuel pump for good measure while the tank was out. from the other forum has a lot of info that may be helpful.

 

That secondary filter was my concern. They don't show up as a separate component on the parts breakdown.

 

The p/n for the housing is in my post and it’s not very expensive.

 

So...
Fuel pump and strainer kit...$130 (Denso)
Fuel level sending unit.. $80 (OEM on eBay)
Secondary filter housing... $35 (OEM on eBay)
Gasket/O-ring... $13
I'm looking at $260 give or take to rebuild the fuel pump assembly.

Strange though. When i input 23300-50120 for the secondary filter housing, Toyota parts show it does not fit a 2005 with the 4.7L.

 

Well, removed fuel tank and pump assembly today and nothing but the level sending unit matches up.
Maybe there was a change up sometime during production?
Should have just spent the $600 on a new replacement unit.
