    Hello,
I'm new here. Considering the purchase of a 2016 or newer 4Runner. Not sure if a certified vehicle justifies the higher selling price. Ideally, I'm looking in the $20-30K range.
Not familiar with any of the mechanical issues the 5th generation trucks are known for. Have some general questions:

    1. how often should the fluids be changed (transmission, transfer case, differential/s, others)
    2. what are the "weak" points of this vehicle to look out for or keep an eye on?
    3. any particular year to stay away from?
    4. does the V6 have a timing chain or belt? How often should it be replaced?
    5. how well will it tow a 4000lb travel trailer?
    6. how well do the steering and suspension components hold over time (ball joints, control arms, tie rods, etc.)

I've owned Mercedes (ML430 and 500) and Land Rover LR4 SUV's before and did all of the maintenance and most of the repairs myself but at this point in my life, I'm looking for a more reliable/less expensive to maintain vehicle and, from what I've read, these trucks are the ticket.

Any and all advice is highly appreciated.

    Sergio

    1. Look up owners manual.
2.not many issues reported, research and come to your own conclusion. it’s a gas hog, but it’ll keep running. Maybe someone can expand on this.
    3. No
    4. Chain, owners manual.
    5. Subjective to your own driving style.

I had a 2011 and now a 2018, no issues from either. It’s an old platform, nothing fancy, but it works and is reliable.
Buying certified is always a plus, gives an extra piece of mind. Just shop around and you’ll find prices vary.
