Hi! I just purchased a 2000 4Runner limited with the rear locker and I’m super happy with it. I knew it burned a little oil before I bought it but I got a great deal. I was wondering what the most likely culprit is for a 5vz that burns oil? Thanks for any help!

If I tell you, it might not seem like such a great deal.

It has 305k miles, but no smoke at exhaust and it runs great.

The other possibilities are leaks from front oil or cam shaft seals or valve cover. when the engine is warm put a cardboard under the engine check for oil drips. you did not mention how much oil you are losing.

Sorry I should’ve mentioned, it’s not much oil at all.

How much oil is not much oil at all? How many miles between oil changes?

The 5vz does NOT burn oil.

You probably have a rear main seal or a valve cover leak which is super super common.

Regardless, if you can't find external leaks, do a (dry and wet) compression and leak down test for all the cylinders. of the engine.
